whilst out on the calder this evening, drowning a few maggots and hoping to catch what ever swims,my mate Paul had a very pleasent surprise, when he brought to the net what he thought could have been a large trout or chub, to find it was a beautiful barbel of 2lb 13oz

reply to Morston:
i think you seem a little confused about the area where this fish was caught. the stretch the link refers to is the otherside of the pennines, which i think runs into the ribble. i know that there were barbel introduced into the WEST YORKSHIRE stretch a few years ago around 30 miles down river of where this fish was caught i am very familiar with the stretch of river were this barbel was caught, having fished it regularly for many years, and believe this is the first barbel to be caught in this area. if anyone else has any info on the Calder Valley stretch,of the River Calder, nr Halifax, West Yorkshire i would like to know thanks in edit: i would also like to add that we both fish for barbel regularly on other rivers, although this is only a small fish,we were both very happy to see it caught from this stretch of the river calder |

They do swim upstream you know....how do you think they spread.
I have fished on the Calder. They have been in there for many years. I don't understand the point you are making Cahal |

Re: surprise from calder

morston, the point you seem to be making is, that this fish is no big deal.
to you maybe not to us it was have you any proof of barbel being caught from this area, if you havn't, why do you feel you need to make a point about my post |

Cahal,
Isnt Phil trying to tell you that this is the first barbel he has heard of from this stretch of the river. It might not be a surprise to you, but surely it warrants a more positive response? Wurzel http://www.barbelzone.co.uk/

Re: surprise from calder

Why are seeming affronted?
You posted about a barbel from the calder. I replied saying they had been in there for years. They will obviously migrate...that is what they do. They have obviously reached your neck of the woods which is a few miles upstream of where they have been for a while. Why is my saying that contentious? ...and if you don't want people to comment about your post why put it on an open message board? Cahal |

I was simply making the point that barbel are not new in the Calder. It is hardly surprising that they have spread. Why the hostile response? Cahal |

Cahal,
Let me spell it out for you: NEGATIVITY!!! Wurzel http://www.barbelzone.co.uk/

Re: surprise from calder

What negativity?
Read my first post on this thread. I simply posted a link which showed they had been in the Calder for years. What was wrong with that? I did not initially make any comment on the merits of the catch. I would not even have followed it up but I then got an indignant response for some reason. Cahal |

Re: surprise from calder

morston,if you go back and read my first post,i was asking if anyone had heard of one being caught in THAT area
i just felt that your reply was trying to tell me, that they had been there in that area years, when i think they haven't also, i was trying to inform other anglers that the river is improving all the time, as the area i'm talking about used to be very industrial |

Re: surprise from calder

I was not commenting on whether it is unusual or not.
All my link did was point out that they are in the river. They have obviously spread. Great. Why are you making such a big deal out of a pretty harmless response? This is an open message board. Next time why not tell what sort of response will be acceptable to you? Cahal |

Re: surprise from calder

ok morston just for you
Q:have you heard of barbel being caught from the area mentioned.please answer yes/no Q:if you ansewered yes to the above, could you please reply with details thankyou |

morston |
Re: surprise from calder
|
Well maybe that is the crux.
Anglers may be catching fish and keeping quiet about it. Cahal and if you want helpful responses don't have a pop at those who reply |

Re: surprise from calder

no answer then you must have caught loads from the area mentioned and keeping it quiet then lets face it you have no idea of the area i'm talking about,if you had you would know your last post, and the link you provided was bo**ocks now are we going to agree to disagree like adults or carry it on a little longer p.s i need to get to work |

As someone got out of the wrong side of the bed,all the guys trying to do is explain that theres a Barbel been caught from an area he has not seen one from before.Hes using the board for what is was designed for giving guys information, good on you.And by the way i cannot find one single report of a Barbel from the area he has mentioned. So indeed the report is very valid for anglers in that area.
