"modern Barbel Baits & tactics" by John Baker might fit the bill?
I don't use 'his' baits, and I'm not 'into' all this complicated chemists stuff, but it is worth a read paul4 |

Cheers Paul, but I've already got it and it doesn't really go into the kind of depth that I'm after.

Ken Townley did a book for Beekay which might be what you are looking for.

There were a few mini books around years ago with quite a bit of very useful info. Geoff Kemps was one, SBS did another - both have long gone. Another source of information was various carp and specialist books that had a chapter on bait. Carp Fever by Kevin Maddocks and one of the Hutchy books.
Personally didn't rate the JB one at all. There was a lot of info on one internet site but this has closed. Can deal with most things concerning baits but when amino acid profiles etc etc come into the discussion I tend to glaze over. Think it would be useful for someone to write something on functionality of ingredients - sort of thing that came up recently on pastes and boiling times - ingredients to make things bind, skin, texture etc etc. Cheers Bob |

Yes Bob, that's exactly what I was after really something on the functionality of ingredients I'm guessing that there isn't anything out there along these lines ??

The info on the above site is very useful, however it is worth remembering that many commercial fishmeal type baits are now made from pre-digested fish meals, which make them suitable for winter usage. Sorry but i can't give anymore info on this as I no longer bother with mixing my own recipes.

Hi Rich,
No not that I've come across - shame. Predigested fishmeal - the stuff resembles cement and is a very good ingredient. It's largely soluble and does add binding 'power' to some mixes. Cheers Bob |

Rob Maylins Tiger Bay also has a bit about making baits including some recipes, but doesnt have any info on amino acid compounds etc. I spent around 15 years making my own baits, but the cost of all the separate ingredients and flavours, plus the time taken to make up baits, combined with the introduction of very high quality frozen ready mades, means that i find it cheaper and easier to buy them. I think its fun if you have the time and money and very satisfying catching on your own baits. I think SBS still supply some bait ingredients although i havent seen any recent adverts.
