What inclusion level would you use for black pepper essential oil?
This is for a attraction paste for wrapping pellet I will not be feeding it. Thanks G |

Interesting - most views I have heared have suggested similarly low levels.
Archie Bradocks on Essential Oils: Essential oils are the most underrated and misunderstood bait enhancers in carp fishing, and the usual few drops suggested are far too low. They are totally natural products obtained from various plants and trees around the world and are very complex substances. Each one contains between seventy and eighty constituents, and every oil has a different make-up. They also vary from thin and watery, like Ginger Oil, to thick and syrupy, such as Patchouli. Some will partly absorb into water while others are immune to it and just float on the surface. I think anglers have missed out in the past by trying to use them as a flavour, but I believe they work better as a taste. I also believe they have nutritional value. Further, they withstand heat better than any flavours, and they are the only liquids I would recommend adding to the mix before boiling. |

Steve Stayner urges caution with the amounts of essential oils used in boilie mixes etc even going as far as to suggest that too much essential oil in the mix will put fish off the bait.
I think from memory he was suggesting one drop per four egg mix for boilies but stand to be corrected. ATB Mark. |

hi Mark, i have used b\p EO to an inclusion rate of 16 drops (1ml) per 6 egg mix very successfully,
the actual strength\concentration of EO products can vary drastically from differing sources, a great tip i had from this site was not to buy them (EO`s) from fishing bait suppliers and instead to use aromatherapy outlets, when this is the case and i do not have a manufacturers guidline to work to, i err on the side of caution and do not use it at above the one drop per egg rule, les |

Les,
Yes, I concur - the oils Stayner was recommending were from aromatherapy outlets. I had a go with the angelica he raves about - it smelt right and I was amazed when it didn't work right away. I'll have to give it a more thorough testing soon. ATB Mark |

I'm with Mark, I bought the angelica - enduring some funny looks from some chinese medicine shops, I'm still waiting for it to produce. All said it does do the business for Steve and others.

Should try the garlic Essential Oil
Been using it for a couple of years now at a very low level. Ok, it doesn`t go into hookbaits as I don`t bother making them but I`ll use it in groundbait. When it goes into boilies for the carp its at the rate of 1 drop per pound. Strong stuff but very, very effective. ![]() By three methods we may learn the wisdom to catch barbel: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.-(Apologies to Confucius!) |

I used 1 drop per egg last year, and almost definately too much (in a HNV mix anyway). Probably going to leave it out altogether this year, if using as a campaign. Will use 1 drop per 4 eggs otherwise...

One reason I use Nutrabaits EOs (and have done for decades) and not those from the Bodyshop, and pay for the privilege, is the field testing done on them, the consistent quality and the knowledge that the suggested inclusion rates are good guidelines - and then I err on the low side.
A few years back (15ish) when Garlic EO was the latest rage, on one carp water, some bright sole decided that flavour levesl not EO levels was the way to go with Garlic EO (1 ml not 1 drop to a 6 egg mix). His bait floated up uneaten - even the ducks would not eat it! It put the fish off boilies for months and Garlic baits for years. So yes overdoing the EO level can be detrimental. As for Archie Braddocks comment on most EO levels are too low, he uses attractor baits and from what I've read (book, articles and web), rarely considers using a long term bait; merely changing the flavour-attractor combinations. If you want an attractor bait with no long term bait in mind, you should perhaps use flavours or one of the amino solutions (at recommended levels), if you want a label for your long term HNV bait use an EO and no flavour. For pastes err on the low side for EO inclusion as you will not be boiling. But hey its your money, your bait and your fishing time.... - Dr Barbus That which is everybodys business is nobodys business.

a lot of essential oils in concentated levels are poisonous,
in moderation they are fine, i have always limited the dose at 2-3 drops per 1 lb dry mix maximum, oh yes they do work fine and with carp can take a long time before blowing...j.w |
