A little tip that may be of use to some who fish the meat... |
Lead | |
|
When fishing hair rigged meat, (as I prefer to do, because I find pushing the hook through tends to weaken the meat, as well as masking the hook point). I had a problem with the cheese wire effect of the hair cutting through it. I've overcome this by threading a fine bore piece of plastic tube onto the hair and making sure it can't come off with a dab of super glue (don't want to feed the fish pieces of plastic do we?) Problem solved....For those of you that already do this..apologie's..For those who don't....Give it a try.I find it works a treat..Kindest...Jim..

Have you tried using a small Rawlplug on your hair rig? If you have a small loop as a hair you can feed it through the end of the rawlplug, out of one of the slits and then slip it over the other side to anchor it.
It only works with bigger pieces because of the size of the plug, but it don't half hang onto it. |

Seeing Derek's mention of crusty, reminded me of frying peices of meat to form a thick, tough outer coating. The secret of success with this is--Only use a hard fat (Lard) and fry on a low heat with a very gentle sizzle. You can at the same time add various powders to flavour the meat..I find the best way is when the meat has formed a skin in the pan, put your chosen Powder flavour in a basin, and put the meat in while it's still hot. As it cools it will draw the flavour into the meat..A trip to the food shop will find you no end of interesting spices or whatever to try...Handy if you get peckish whilst fishing too!!
Many thank's for that Nicepix...Sound's well worth a try |

I've found the easiest way to keep HUGE pieces of "whatever" meat on the hairis to tie a very short hair then twist on a length of florist's wire, you can adjust the length to suit and by putting it through the meat at an angle then back through at an opposite angle it won't cut the meat.

As I said t'other week, bait band on end of hair, pull through meat, stick a big pellet in the band & pull back through to sink pellet into base of meat.

I must admit in flood conditions I like to have the hook almost completely buried in the meat, to prevent the hook point being masked by any leaves, weed, general flotsam coming downstream that may cause a problem on a hair rigged bait.
If I,m not using meat, but using boilies or pellets on a hair in flood conditions, a layer of paste around the boilie, pellet, and hook does the same job. The hook point goes home very easily in the event of a bite. Keep your pastes not too stiff though ! Time spent in recconnaissance is seldom wasted....

If you are using stiff tubing, cut some serrations into it. - make up a load at home with Stanley/Model Knife Attach as with your idea. Once pushed into the meat, turn by about 90 degrees and hangs on even more. The serrations cut into the meat internally Cheaper than Enterprise Boilie Spikes - which work Another alternative is a wire spring - pliers and paper clip, tie onto short hair. - or buy the ones in tackle shop screw them into meat and hangs on For humungous pieces of meat you can thread the hook length through -and partially bury the hook which avoids the meat breaking up. Or use black pudding! - Dr Barbus -- Dr Barbus

Another tip when using massive pieces is to use a small peice of spaghetti tucked under the partially buried hook bend to stop it ripping through on the cast. Once immersed the spaghetti softens...

Hi Darren...Just got back from walking the bank's, and what did I see----A chap using spaghetti as a stop..New one on me, I must say...Blooming clever though..Also he was hair rigging paste by a method I've not seen before..He threaded a small spring on the hair and secured it with a split shot..He gets his supply of springs from plastic clothes pegs!! He was staying in a caravan buy the river. While I was there his little grand daughter came running along to say the electric had gone off in the van. So being a good samariton I offered to look after his tackle while he went and sorted it. He was gone about three quaters on an hour so I had plenty of time to try his paste rig..There was a good flow on, but it really worked a treat!!....Kindest..Jim..
