Uncooked Hemp?? |
Lead | |
|
Went to the Barbel Society meeting in Lancashire on Friday listened to a very interesting and entertaing talk by Fred Crouch and one of the things he said was that he uses gallons of hemp and he never cooks it just soaks it overnight anyone else has any thoughts on this,as its a lot less hassle than cooking plus it doesnt upset the family with the smell

hiya GORDMH
my mate has just give me a carp magazine that he had done with and in that, one of the experts giving advice said that he only ever used hemp that he had covered in boiling water,in a cool box and left to soak 24 hours he also gave some good tips for everday additives i hadn't thought of its a new one on me too but going to try it Phil |

No he said he never cooked it,he said the only reason hemp came to be cooked was so the kernal could split and a small hook could be pushed into the soft white inner for roach fishing. When he cought barbel he gently pushed along its stomach to the vent and the seeds would come out as barbel couldnt digest them cooked or uncooked my own view is that there would be very little leak off of flavour, but last year Angling Times was present when Fred caught his 10,000 barbel so its difficult to knock it

Does it germinate? I thought all hemp was treated so it couldnt germinate, as it could be grown into a certain weed (sic) synonymous with very long cigs, also if it did germinate and grow im sure we,d see banks upon banks of strange plants not only hemp but every other particle.it doesn,t happen does it/ not that im advocating not cooking particles but the soaking process is to swell the seed and let it take on water,so as not to do it in a fishes stomach and cause damage as has happened in the past with tiger nuts and carp but as for the cooking have you seen a tiger nut growing in the margins anywhere

Hows it going to germinate in the fishes gut anyway? If they cant digest it it will simply come out the other end.

Thats exactly what Fred was saying!fish dont have stomachs as we do,wereby food is swallowed and sits in the stomach to be broken down by gastric juices, which in turn allow the body to utilise all the nutrient parts and get rid of whats left, this takes time,a fish on the other hand swallows its food and whilst its passing through its gut it utilises the nutrition, anything that cant be broken down comes out the other end ( a bit like us with sweetcorn) Watch a goldfish eating within a minute or two its getting rid of the waste,He believes that fish like hemp cos its similar to water snails i think they like it cos its usually in plentiful supply and smells good (to them anyway)
