I would like to join such a club,but it says you have to have reasonable exspearence,are eny of you guys members ??. im going to write to them tonight ,but i think its a bit of a closed shop,ive only been fishing this season ,for barbel,but hay for the price of a stamp,i thought i would give it a go. all the best paul

Posts: 530 (25/10/06 18:13) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The Catchers Club is a group of experienced barbel anglers (and Tommo) and is indeed a bit of a closed shop, I think you have to be invited to join. Your best bet is to give the Barbel Society a go, that way you will get the opportunity to meet like minded folk, attend their functions and hopefully take your barbel fishing to a higher level. I know that the BS come i for some stick and often quite rightly, but their membership is high and there are loads of anglers of all levels of expertese ready to pass on advise to the newcomer.

The "Dark Arts",are their game.Way beyond "Hogwarts".They dance naked on the 15th of June,around a Maypole,with 'ol Izaacks head.Upon the top.Coverd in,"Fish Oils". They at times use "bobbins",as bite indication.They should of course be "carbelling". All jokeing aside,have a good mate in the BCC.And "Guided" an old "Pin Man",of theirs the other week. A good bunch of guys all round mate.No "airs 'an graces". Be careful though,they will "guest" on your waters.But,you'll never get asked to theirs Eh Big Bird "Drums fingers on desk"

Introduce yourself, let Paul know what you are about and he will give you some more info on the club. Ignore the secret squirrel, funny handshakes and all that stuff & nonsense.....someone once described us a "drinking club with a bit of a fishing problem"....and a bit of a curry problem to boot. You will of course be expected to have written a book on how good you are, had your name & pictures in all the weeklies, preferably not smiling, own a floppy hat and cane rod...goes without saying and be able to stuff 50+ 21mm pellets up your nether region without sniggering!...apart from that... As a club you get out of it what you put in...if you get involved, write a few articles for the internal magazine and are willing to have the p*** ripped out of you on regular and unrelenting intervals...then the BCC is the club for you. Many of the posters on this site are members.... I could reveal many of them...but I am under pain of having my gggrrraarrgghhhhhggg rippppgggggrrrrdd oowwwwwwaattttttttthhhhh................. DT ( Secret Records Officer of the BCC.....Ssssh you aint seen me right! )

Knew the then Sec.(?), in the 1980s, the very sound Alan Slater of Theale... Never been a member, nevr been a member of anything, but might be sometime if I don't have to turn up with my boots blacked, or do funny handshakes... Will have "their" Garry-Mills-made centrepin before Christmas, though, and, by God, I am going to use it...

I'm still using a £40 Mordex Merlin on my roaming gear but you can bet your boots that as soon as I can justify buying something a bit better I guarantee it will be strapped onto a rod and covered in slime. Posts: 142 (27/10/06 20:06) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	A lot of these things aren't so much the materials, or the design, it's the man-hours to put them together. The basic engineering is fairly simple, just high tolerance stuff. The guys that make these things do the same sort of thing as a day job. I picked up my Brough barbel rod (www.brough-rods.co.uk) today. Absolutely fabulous piece of kit - 11ft of split cane, there are only four in existence (at the moment). I spent what I consider a small fortune on it (hence partly why I need to sell the BCC) but the reason for the high cost isn't the components, it's the time and effort that goes into making this sort of thing. To make this sort of rod, John (Brough) takes what is in a sense a £20 pole, splits it, heat-treats it two or three times, does all sorts of stuff with the nodes etc. Mills it, glues, binds, cleans, whips, fits handles, rings etc. etc. All to a high tolerance. The time it takes to make is nearing 100 hours I'd think. The reels are similar - the basic materials are fairly cheap, the time to make them to the tolerances required are the key to cost. I don't think you'll find a rich bespoke tackle-maker in this age, but I think they are all pretty happy doing what they do!!! I'll write a review of the Broughy when I've caught one or two barbel with it.
