Re: Scaling down | ||

Mark,
Back in the 80s fishing the middle Severn I used to catch loads of shoalies in the three to five pound bracket on maggot feeder on a running loop rig and a size 18 to 6 lb Drennan double strength bottom, when it got hard I would drop to a 20 or even a 22 hook and 3lb or 1.7 lb bottom. In those days I was using a cut back match rod with a solid glass donkey top spliced in it, it was soft as baby poop and I lost surprisingly few although the larger ones did take a while to get in. A seven pounder was classed as a specimen in those days and a ten would guarantee you a picture in the comics and quite possibly a front page. Needless to say they were always stuffed into a keepnet in those days and if we had less than half a dozen in a day it was a poor day, a normal bag would be ten to fifteen and a good day would see you with twenty or more. Those numbers of fish are still caught every summer on the middle Severn but of course everyone is now on the pellet and the humble maggot is a forgotten bait by many, but mark my words , it is only a matter of time before it makes a comeback, it is already happening on the carp circuit. Adrian. Next Shropshire b/s meeting Nov 24. Speakers Fred Crouch & Steve Pope. P.M. me for details. |

Graham,
I usually try 1/6th tin first ie 1 horizontal cut and 3 vertical cuts on half the tin. If theyre having it i just continue with one sixth. if i'm catching smaller fish i change to 1/4 of a tin ie 1 vertical cut on the remaining half tin and so on. I always scrape the flat sides off with a pen knife so that the bait is never perfectly square and spread what comes off back onto the bait. The bait then sends little bits of scraped off meat downstream and increases the scent rail. After dark, it never fails. Wurzel http://www.barbelzone.co.uk/

Scarping with a fork or pronged thingy does the trick. Gives a nice greasy furry bait. If you're into flavouring then this approach also retains the flavour/additives longer.

Mark
I caught a 9 pounder on a size 20 a few years ago and have seen a picture of a much bigger fish caught on a size 20 hook. It was not a deliberate catch though. cahal |

Does this mean the BCC are having one of their legendary Ouse blanking sessions on Friday? I might as fish elsewhere then, as rumour has it every time they turn up en mass the barbel go into hiding! - Dr Barbus That which is everybodys business is nobodys business.

Fish, Garlic and Curry | ||
|
Paul are you being impish again?
The history of carp and barbel fishing littered with baits containing garlic and or curry. For example garlic essential oil is a high profile bait additive whether in a bird food (eg Enervite) or milk protein. It has been used with devastating effects on many high profile waters. Curry is just a mixture of spices. Rob Maylin, for example, used Tandoori flaours (spices) in his baits on many of the Colne Valley carp waters (Savay) etc. Luncheon meat and curry are synonymous for flood and cold water fishing. Bait suppliers catalogues all list garlics, curry and curry ingredient additives etc. Have a look at some of their websites. Quote from Nutrabaits website Quote: - Dr Barbus Read Archie Braddocks Fantastic Feeder on these as flavours or visit his website www.braddocksbaits.co.uk/ That which is everybodys business is nobodys business.

Re: Fish, Garlic and Curry | ||

i am impish i sopose..but whats the difference,between baits,when thay all seen to atract fish,put it this way,
what would your prefere if you was a barbel. thay dont care. i think a fish would go for eny treat,if you put the bait in ,keep it simple,try to go were no ones fished there before or not very often. its a simply way to get the buggers. |

Baits | ||
|
Some baits work in some conditions, other baits work in a different set of conditions. Some baits work across a range of conditions, and some baits work across a wider range of conditions than other baits. Some baits have a track history of big fish too. And some baits work better than others when in competition with other baits.
Depending on the water, and angling pressure, knowing that can be the difference between blanking and not. What a barbel prefers is food with no hooks or anglers! - Dr Barbus |

Eels certainly love the black pepper variety.Perhaps the garlic flavour will deter them as well as any vampires.

Garlic Oil was one of the additives used on shropshire meres to deter eels from carp baits.
