I caught one last season on a Spanish dog treat fished over pellets!!
When my youngest daughter was very fond of it, i tried to tempt one with Billy Bear sausage! alas, without success. |

Come on All
105 veiws and only 1 reply, some of you most have had one on a odd bait before. I have seen people have them on Slugs but i dont fancy collecting them and hooking them. May be someone will come up with a new wonder bait ? I thought this topic would have be a fun with some great new baits but not so far. |

I,ve had a few on Frolic dog biscuits. They,re shaped like a Polo Mint, only bigger and thicker.
Time spent in recconnaissance is seldom wasted....

I've used Frolics,in the summer before.And caught well on them.I recently,bought some 5 kilo bags,to keep.
They are getting hard to get in supermarkets now. A good breakdown time, they seem to "fizz" on the bottom, leaking flavour ect. YP |

Bakers complete dog food, campball meatballs is about as unlikely as it gets for me. There again I am not too experimental.

Frolic, international standby bait
As for weird barbel baits, I had one in the summer on a big chunk of fresh pineapple. Instant bite too and a nice fish of around 7lb. ATB Mark. |

Its funny but generally we only use odd or new baits when the old favourites have failed. Its like lure fishing for pike used to be - failed on deads or lives so you put your Woolworths spinner on, caught nowt and concluded lure fishing was sh*te!
So I rarely bother with different baits now - I present an old favourite better (or smaller) when the going gets tough - unless I've established a new bait with a baiting campaign. However - I did catch a barbel on the Dordogne on bacon rind! Also only ever had one barbel on cheese yet others swear by it - what's that all about? Kev PS Derek I didn't understand your post - you've got very cryptic of late - is it the menopause? |

Quote: Are you catching this year derek? I once caught on a red jelly baby when my daughter was about eight or nine and into jelly babies in a big way, it was a bet with my mate, the fish were really having it and he said it was too easy, so we tried all sorts of stuff and caught on most of them including malt loaf and jam butties, I remember that the hair rigged Everton mint didn't catch. These days I stick to the old favourites, pellets wakas and spam, if none of those work I go to the pub, its only fishing at the end of the day. Barbel fisher 21 has an article by Adrian Taylor where he describes fishing for Barbel with Haribo (gummy) bears; that sounds like a fun challenge and I may well give it a go next summer. Oh, Ive just remembered another odd bait which my brother in law caught a carp on. It was a bogey, and he was about twelve at the time. |

It's a shame that the Everton mint failed Adrian, what a dilemma that would have presented to Paul Swift!

hi,slip i have become very cryptic, ime afraid i only understand plain english,so please use simple words with me.
as regards other baits, doesnt take much to work out what i ment.nowerdays it seem to be a rule of thumb,to either use a pellit or boilie, and if you dont get a bite there not feeding. amazing really that years ago,and during the close season, that barbel manage to survive without pellits and boilies.ime not saying that there a bad bait,as a lot of barbel are caught on them, but if you see the bottom of some swims where they are still laying on the bottom from a previous session from another angler[like i have this season]then another bait is well worth a try,but ime not one that follows the crowd.derek |

hi Thomo74,
i knows a chap who enjoyed a bumper catch of Barbel on the Wye on Tiger Nut boilies during silly water temps...2.2-2.4 dg, air temps were minus 4 to 6 dg, i know that Barbel dont feed at them temps as i often read such "knowledge" all across the web, so i fished for Pike and had a brace so, was he on the money..or dids they wants it ??? les |
