There is a huge difference between the two types of shimano baitrunner. Seen quite a few bearings go in the cheaper version (REs) Depends how much use it will get though, the lastability of the more expensive reels is something else. Only just retired my first pair of 3500 GTs after 15+ years...

I understand. Worth considering Okumas etc as well, as you do seem to get more for your money in that price range.

Quote: I'm not so sure. I think there's a big difference between Baitrunners made fifteen years ago and those made more recently. My original Aero Baitrunners (bought when they first came out in 1990/91 or thereabouts) were the cheap jobs - and are in better nick, internally, than the GTs I bought a few years ago. -----------

Evening All,
I had a "Play" with the new XTEA baitrunners today and must admit they look, and more inportantly feel superb. Got to admit that the GTE-B's are good and have been very pleased with mine, but these new ones are significately better. Think I'll be investing in a 5000. I've had baitrunners for years and have never had any problems with them, some I have are over 15 years old and still going strong... so they don't cost that much for that amount of trouble free years fishing ! Think I'll stick with my pair of 5000 Aero Gt's (pre the aluminium spool model and at least 10years old I think)
good workhorses that are completely used and abused rarely cleaned and have never let me down. And if they did I'd send them to Felindre for a service and then they'd come back good as new and ready for another 10 years of use and abuse. Ringo |

has anyone used these reels yet and are the an improvement on the old ones(drag).Its just a shame shimano didn't make this new reel a front drag.

Re: 5000xtea | ||

A massive improvement on the GTE-b5000's, Very smooth, beautifully balanced and no oscillation whatsoever, Some new and welcome tweaks as well!. They have a lubrication point, a small screw on the main body you remove and top up with oil (provided), means no more stripping down. Drag feels very smooth and the baitrunner adjustment is larger and easier to adjust. Out on the Thames with them tonight, hopefully a Boris will grace my net. Full review WILL follow after a few sessions use. ATB Adam Opener of worm cans and quantity surveyor of the moral high ground.
