Fished it the other week and caught my pb 13.01. Two nights before somebody had a 14.14 from the same swim apparently.
It's not easy though. Basically the barbel generally stay below the road bridge (which is private water). They move up after dark and you really need to be prepared to fish right into the early hours - perhaps 2am. And sometimes they don't come up at all (or not very far). If they do move up, and you do catch one, chances are it'll be a biggie! (or a chub!!). My advice is to try to get a swim as near to the bridge as possible. Fish right into the margins (do a reccy in daylight, look for patches of gravel near the bank - and I mean within a yard or so of the bank - aim to fish a 14mm halibut pellet on one of these patches, feed small pellet). They seem to prefer pellet - that was what mine came on and the 14.14 too. Chub like boilies apparently. While we were there the river was gin-clear and low. Hopefully it has come up now, but to give yourself the best chance, I'd be prepared to fish clear mono/fluoro. During the day, fish worm near the bank in the sidestream for chub and perch to 1lb. And anybody fishing the lake, my mate had a 25lb common while we were there. |
