I have had 2 break on me now so wish to go for a different make. 1 was purchased through BFW and the other as a package from another store. Both the same version though. I see Fox and Drennan do a specialist telescopic pole. Does anyone have any experience with these or perhaps someone could recommend an alternative. Many thanks. Sorry if this has been covered before. I have carried out a search but can't seem to find any results. Nathan.

I have the one from BFW (but it's not BFW who's at fault here) and it needed much modification and still it has some problems - others have had to do the same, but there are those who are happy. Bob (bgit) will undoubtedly add some of his hard-found knowledge as this is one of his pet (NOT) subjects paul4

Some aren't up to the job of fishing off of higher banks, others jam, others do both! Although it needed some simple modifications, I still use my old faithful Conoflex heavy duty one (although this too has it's critics) I have a quick lock extension that fits onto this to give it an extended reach. The latest was the Drennan Super Specialist with variable twist lock - starts to crack if you tighten too much and the mechanism on the end that tightens to hold it in place periodically falls of inside the pole . Therefore I have just ordered the 24" Ray Walton Whitelock folding landing net from Davis Tackle after reading several good reviews. Expensive, but looks a very substantial quality item that should last for many years. Also added benefit of being able to carry it across your shoulder leaving yor hands free. I never realised you could do that with the FAQ section! Not sure what to do. I have duck tapped my landing net pole. Hopefully it will hold together. Seems pretty solid, but I don't think it's a permanent solution. May look at the Drennan.

Posts: 601 (26/07/06 23:13) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have got a Trefor West job that weighs a ton and sticks as soon as it gets a bit of silt in the locking mechanism. So today I took it to bits by removing the threaded collar that is held in place by a pop rivet and pushing the inner out of the end of the outer. I then rubbed the inner pole down with fine wet and dry emery paper. I started with 1,500 grit and ended with 12,000 grit paper; this is specialist stuff and comes from a friend in the aerospace industry. I then rubbed the whole thing with a light coat of silicone polish before reassembling it. The difference it has made is astonishing; the telescopic mechanism is now silky smooth, the cam lock works beautifully and whereas before I used to dread trying to extend it, it is now a joy to use. When I reassembled it, instead of using a pop rivet to hold the collar on, I used a self taping screw. This should make life a little easier next time it needs cleaning. An hour well spent. Its still heavy though. $:\$

I wrote this (below) for a couple of people who followed suit a while back -------------------------------- My method of modifying a powerstretch : Drill out the rivet holding the threaded chrome boss, and removed boss I cut off 1" from the inner as it was showing signs of de-laminating. Cut off the end of the rubber end on outer tube of the handle Now the inner tube can be withdrawn from the bottom end. This inner tube, in my case, needed wet and dry treatment to remove scratches. Glue some tubeing (I used some chromed copper pipe which I happened to have and was a good fit), about a 4" length, into the top of the inner, and when dry filled the bore of this tube with car body filler. (better bet would be a soild piece of alloy or brass, but I no longer have access to a lathe) Temporarily replace the boss and carefully drill through the existing hole in the boss, and right through the tube and out of the other side of the boss. Refit the inner tube into the outer and spray the inner liberally with some silicon furniture polish. Wind some thin masking tape around the end of the tube to ensure the boss is a tight fit - be very careful to ensure the boss is fully home by tapping with a mallet as trapped air might act as a buffer, and the holes would not align. I made a mark further down the tube as a reference and measured it. Fit a suitable screw (M4 thread and preferably plated) and add a nyloc nut for security. Cut a suitable plug from some expanded polyethylene foam packaging and fit this into the end of the handle to stop muck getting in. This all sounds very complicated when written, it is quite easy. I reckon to simply remove the screw and disassemble as/when necessary to clean it all - but remember you cannot undo a nyloc without tools, so not a bankside job unless you have pliers and a screwdriver in your tackle bag. Replace the screw at the end of the season if rust is a problem, you could use a brass screw but I think nylocs are only available in steel. paul4

Think the basic problem (well on my Powerstretch and my mates) is that the material when abraded exposes tiny little fibres which help the jamming process. Silicone - well hate anything silicone based - plays havoc with most modern finishes including Flex Coat . Recently invested in a metalworking lathe, found my 3/8" BSF taps and dies and will be making up a few bits and bobs. As previously mentioned, my Conoflex (real fibreglass!) heavy duty handle may have a few warts but it's going strong, despite trying other rather lack lustre alternatives. Cheers Bob

Not quite sure why the technical geniuses in the tackle companies can't produce a better product but guess they there isn't enough money in it.

We had a positive discussion about maybe some mods, but it's all gone quiet now. Shows that some manufacturers take note of some comments here on bfw. Incidentally, I managed to modify my Conoflex to give 9' 2" reach and also managed to make a quick add extension of around 4' - from the bits of another problematic pole. Cheers Bob

I have gone back to using a 2 part extending ali one I bought probably 20 years or so ago. It seems to be teflon coated, and has long been jammed up inside with the teflon coming away, but its long enough and bloomin' strong. Won't be breaking the boss off that (famous last words?) Phil

My thinking is that there doesn't seem to be a decent handle out there so I may as well just replace this once once a year or so when I bend it!
