As the sensible posts suggest here, it goes without question. There is absolutely no need for any glass bottle or tin to be anywhere near a fishing bank. Regardless of club rules (that may or may not cover this) I think this is simply a good discipline for us all to follow. There are plenty of more environmental options available to us. And still you will see it flaunted where some just simply cannot be bothered to take it home with them.
My clubs place the onus on the individual fishing the swim they are in. If there is any litter (normally left by others) it is the responsibility of that angler to remove it. I have even witnessed arguments with bailiffs over a tin on the bank that was not the property of the guy fishing there, and rightly so. I guess its our environment so we should look after it particularly when on a clear day you actually see a tin or bottle discarded in the river. Thats my bit anyway. Regards Mick |

Meat is the only bait a specimen hunters needs.

Actually its good practice to cut/break off meat with a seasoning added. Cajun / Curry etc and allow it to absorb the flavour.
Why no tins on the bank? Because proper anglers find them in the bushes, on the bankside and in the water. Graham |

Last week a carper was "booked" for having a tin of food in his bivvy as we have a strict no tins rule. He should have decanted contents into a plastic tub.

i fished kings weir way back in the 60s, spam was used by almost every angler who fished from kings weir down to fishers green and must have been reguarded by the fish as a natural bait................................................................
Banning tins !!!!!......................................................... unfortunately discarded tins were as prolific as the bait and the banksides looked like they sprouted rusting tins from every bush, shrub, reed patch ect, Why do they ban tins? they were one of the 1st to ban tins and had every reason to do so, yes i keep spare cans in my car boot and thats where the cans stay unless allowed on the fishery at the time and then its out of the can, can in the bag and meat in the tub, incidently Plumrose used to sell foil wrapped irradiated chubby sausage type pack of garlic sausage, luncheon meat ect, anyone know if this stuff is still available please?...j.w |

I'm not sure if that ones still around John, i suggest you check their Website!
I had problems a while back sourcing a Matteson's product, so i checked the site and found that it was still produced, i then contacted the company who gave me a list of retailers! |

Well it seems I am in the minority in taking tins on the bank. Ho hum, such is life.
Whilst you are looking in the undergrowth/bushes/reeds/river for discarded tins, I can guarantee you one thing, you will not find one of mine. As previously stated, I am not responsible for the actions of the irresponsible. |

hi,ime afraid we are all responsable, its a simple matter to pick up any litter you find, weather its yours or not,and may save your club from loosing the waters you fish,i always take a plastic bag with me and put any litter in that.cheers derek.

Mark - Please take no fishing line to the river bank either (this includes on your reel) as I often find this discarded too.

Guy. You need fishing line to go fishing.
You don't "need" a tin. Graham |

Derek, I do indeed pick up ALL the rubbish I find in a swim I fish. I will always end up taking home other peoples litter. I shouldn't have to, but some people do throw rubbish in the bushes or just leave it on the deck, so I have to. I will take it home because I am aware how unsightly and potentially harmful to wildlife it is.
Graham, I buy luncheon meat in a tin. I take it to the river bank in a tin. The tin and the lid go home with me. Unless my club rules change and say I mustn't take tins onto the river bank, I will continue to do so, end of really! |

Graham - I am just trying to make the point that it does'nt really matter what you take to the bank as long as you take it home - discarded line is probably more dangerous to wildlife than a tin. People are the problem NOT tins
Just find BFW can verge on the touch sanctimonious from time to time - for god sake - Mark posted a light hearted thread about cutting himself on a tin. He could quite easily have cut himself opening it at home as well. And you lots all jumped on his thread - you can tell its the close season can't you |

lol guy, that made me chuckle,
my club has no tin bans that i am aware of, so therefore i take my meat in a tin and take the tin home with me after. usually im in a mad rush from work to get fishing so it is more time efficient to grab a tin from the shop and chuck it in the bag. you cant see from the photo however, that i am prebaiting from a road bridge. i wonder who controls the rights there? are tins banned on roads? |

what a mad thread! One poor bloke cuts his hand and everyone goes crazy about tins littering the bank. If your club doesn't allow tins on the bank, don't take them - if it does make sure you take them home with you along with any other litter, yours or otherwise.
