Brian
I don't believe they are necessarily the same since CSL Pellets are labelled as that and likely to have no list of ingredients. Ewe nuts come in different strengths, and I worry about two things. One is that due to them being cheap some people, and I'm not inferring or suggesting you are one of them, may use them a bit unsparingly Having said that I am not a chemist, but have been using them for a few years now, but only in a feeder and never balled in (to use a known phrase) If given a choice of strengths, whatever the salient components (bad phrase?) then opt for the lowest. paul4 |

CountryWide is the place to go and get a 5litre bottle of molasses to steep it all in. I think the pig pellets are the same as well just bigger.

Re: Pellets | ||

Brian - also look at Sugarbeet/ molasses pellets, pig nuts, horsenuts, and even other birdfeeds.
Paul - I am fairly certain they are the same thing rebranded. I have compared them in my hand and they are identical, in smell, texture etc. I also do not believe that CSL pellets are made for fishing - there would not be enough of a market for them. I swear one of my pond Koi said baaaaaa earlier Definitely not made for fishing but as I said, without a list of ingredients you cannot be sure. Whereas "my" ewe nuts mention lambing and that is pretty clear paul4 |

The only thing I was warned about on someEwe Nut's, was the Copper content.
I understand this is harmful to Invertebrates, but I suspect that you would need to use a vast amount to do any damage. But as said above, been cheap it could be a temptation. Steve Out of the darkness, cometh the light.

Be careful with some animal feeds. Lots of them require pre-soaking prior to feeding to animals, due to swelling... and the same must be true for fish too.

Andy - You are quite right Sugarbeet/ molasses pellets need soaking before use as they swell up an incredible amount, Ewe & Pig nuts do not and in fact turn to mush very quickly in water.

Andy, 15 minutes and they have turned to slop.
Bream love the things, I was spodding 7lbs a night plus 2lb groundbait when going for the big bream and they moved on it in no time Not sure I`d use them on a river though. ![]() By three methods we may learn the wisdom to catch barbel: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.-(Apologies to Confucius!) |

I got some "Maize Gluten Straights" last year and gave them the Goldfish test. Crumbled one and gave it them but they totally ignored it. They love good quality boillies though...

Re: Swelling up | ||

Depends really.
I have used, or more honestly tried, to use Ewe Nuts for barbel and found them to be as effective as marbles. Not a lot of good. Yes they are very cheap but they can be as cheap as you want but if they don't help attract fish the point is .......... In stillwaters they worked far better for bream, tench and carp though. To be fair I did use Nutrabaits CSL Pellets as well for a while and found similarly pathetic results for barbel. Do yourself a favour and buy some fishmeal pellets, preferably from the BFW Shop of course Cheers

Having experimented with 'CSL' pellets when I had barbel in a tank I can tell you that their response to them was at best less than enthusiastic.
Add a couple of halibut pellets and they were on them like a shot (along with numerous other food items) but CSL only drew a curiosity response where they noticed an item had been added to their environment but after little more than a taste they were ignored. I haven't used them since. I do accept that CSL liquid is a worthwhile addition to some baits but cheap as they are, in my opinion CSL pellets are of little use in barbel fishing, spend your money on somehting else. |
