Oddly the only two 'inexplicable' hookpulls I have had in the last two seasons have been on continental boilie hooks, I used to swear by them. Much prefer the Korda wide gapes now, simlar hook, but eye is inturned rather than out. I also really like Gardner muggas - although they seem awful for chub!
when I say inexplicable, I mean the ones which seem to fall out for no apparent reason - others have occured but i suspect these were foul-hooked fish. Andy |

Korda wide gapes or westy partridge hooks, as above can't really remember the last time I had a hook pull.
It's really a matter of personal choice though, what one person says is great another will say it's c*ap. Find one or two that you get on well with and stick with em |

Have tried a few different types but always ended up going back to Drennan Super Specialist. They have very rarely let me down and have used them for years

Ive had hookpulls on super specialists, and raptors.
I use Mustad Power Specialists, great hook, nice and cheap too compared to boilie hooks and other carp jobbies. Regards, Darren

Paul,
westy Partridge hooks are good. I've recently converted to Carp r Us, 'Short shank Nailers'. They are a bit like the Gardner Muggas crossed with a Nash Fang. Brilliant so far. AllI would suggest is a bit of shrnk tubing in case the fish hits the bait too hard as they are in-turned quite acutely. Mart |

Myself and the other 2 anglers i fish with use a short shanked hook from a firm called CARP ALLEY, between us we have tried a variety of other hooks but nothing can compare with these.
These are a short shanked hook with a beaked point. (have found that a straight point tends to loose its point to quickly) these hooks are ultra sharp and most of all seem to keep there sharpness. Beetween us we have managed to land over 400+ barbel on these hooks this season, including several doubles up to 17lb9oz,so as you can imagine well pleased. www.carpalley.com/hr-product.html Ginger Gnome Team Barbel |

Re: What Hooks? | ||

The simple truth is that providing you are using a hook that is fit for purpose from a strength point of view, and you stick it firmly into a Barbels (or any other fish for that matter) mouth and keep the line tight it will not come out no matter what pattern you use. Hook pulls are a result of the hook not getting a good hold in the first place and this is a combination of multiple factors such as bait used / presentation / feeding confidence / fishing pressure etc. While I'm on my soapbox a small (strong) hook taken confidently with an optimum hookhold will land more fish than a large hook that has nicked the mouth due to its size and weigh having induced a non confident take in the first place.

I was wondering, what you mean by hook pull, I class hook pulls by bent hook. Is this the case?

Re: What Hooks? | ||

By hook pulls, I mean where the hook comes away in mid fight completely intact and for no apparent reason. I have never suffered with bent hooks or hooks failing on me in that way. I can go weeks with no hook pulls then all of a sudden have loads. In fact I can have none one day and the next day have nothing but.

ESP Raptors for me everytime! Good allround, strong and sharp hooks! Plus having a mate working for them helps!!!!!!
Id describe a "Hook Pull" as: When a hooked fish comes off for no apparent reason, ie, not snagged, not weeded, not applying too much/little pressure. Just when the Hook Pulls out mid fight for nout! Luckily not happend to me for a while, but irritating as hell when it does! Cheers Liam |

Hi
I use a few different hooks. My favourite pattern are the drennan continental boilie hooks - indestructible and are less prone to blunting on the gravel. I use these most of the time. I also use the Korda Wide Gapes that Andy mentions, though i am not entirely happy with their strength, but they are an extremely sharp hook. I slightly opened one of these on a teme tiger in the summer but that is my only problem with them. Also, Raptors are great hooks. Take your pick Incidentally, i have only lost one fish tp a hook pull this season using these hooks. With respect.... |

Re: hooks | ||

I would say it's more technique then hook. If your using barbless always keep a tightline, and always sharpen hook, after each cast. Last but not least, check your clutch! If all these are applied, you shouldn't bounce a fish off again.

Drennan boilie hooks have never let me down so i stick to what i trust,they can go blunt on gravel but a little bit of T.L.C with a diamond stone sorts it out or even better change it.

Standard Drennan Boillie hooks have never let me down.
Also used the Drennan continental boillie hooks (Good but personally I find the hook point turns over more often than others patterns), and the Drennan Specialist Barbel (Good but overpriced and don't visibly seem the sharpest in sizes 10 and under). |

hookpulls are a rarity and a talking point, points dont turn over on gravel or bedrock and the hook is virtually indestructable in an angling situation, les |
