In everyday usage the term 'politeness' describes behaviour which is somewhat formal and distancing, where the intention is not to intrude or impose.Being polite means expressing respect towards the person you are talking to and avoiding offending them.
Behaviour which actively expresses positive concern for others, as well as non-imposing distancing behaviour. In other words, politeness may take the form of an expression of good-will or camaraderie, as well as the more familiar nonintrusive behaviour which is labelled 'polite' in everyday usage.
Speech acts such as compliments, invitations and greetings are generally regarded as positive politeness devices, expressing solidarity and friendliness. Apologies, by contrast, are usually perceived as negative politeness devices, expressing respect rather than friendliness. An apology is a polite speech act used to restore social relations following an offence. Apologies therefore focus on redressing face-threatening behaviour, and they acknowledge the need of the addressee not to be imposed upon or offended.
Please make sure, any relies are polite ones.
