Rod rest heads |

|
I like using the butterfly type rod rest heads but the problem is i keep stripping or breaking the threaded part as it is made of plastic/nylon. What type of rod rest do you use and why and does anyone know where i can get the one i like with a brass or alloy thread.
Thanks in advance. atb malc It's not the size that counts it's the beauty.

I have the type you refer to, had them for years, virtually indestructable. You can get them in three sizes from any of the Mal Storey shops or try t'internet.

Why do you need a rod rest mate? You don't usually have time to put your rod in it.

Wurzel,
Oh sorry - that's my extrovert version. The latex insert (the pink) can be changed for whatever colour you want. The head - well it's a night fishing thang. Have a set of black with blue inserts, but prefer the whites day or night. The 'Barbel God' has a pair of these of some vintage (with black inserts). Cheers Bob |

Do all of the BFW Team have a pair of these now? Mine must be lost in the post somewhere paul4 |

Re: Rod rest heads | ||

Yep, homemade like some of me other bits.
Paul - don't feel left out think they were only given to Barbel God (Dick), Andy T and my fishing buddy Paddy. Maybe I'll work on a few new ones for the opening of season - then who knows. I also do a non slip one for the rod butt - these are a different shape altogether. Ken - just saw your post. A development hopefully to redress some of the shortcomings of available rod rest heads at the time - must go back at least a few years if not longer. Think it was in fairly early years of Bfw. it looks like an attachment for an I-pod, not an I-power
Where on earth did it come from? Ahh, you've answered. I've made my rear rest slip proof by gluing a thin slither of black cork foam in there to increase the surface tension. |

I cant fault the Fox Front Runner Rod Rest Head.
Front runner I've been using them for a few seasons now, I like the simple design. You can also fit Isotopes in them for night fishing if you so wish. |

I use the John Roberts windy rest, but mine are the luminous ones.

Bob,
I like the white, just the pink bits made me twitch a bit. Ive used the fox front runners since they came out and theyve been quite good, although on one occasion i had such a fast take off the baitrunner, line got caught under the rubber bits inside and nearly lost me a fish. Also, the brass screw has got stuck in a bank stick and ive had to break the plastic rest off the screw to get a grip on it to twist it back out of the bank stick. Like most things, they could always be improved. Wurzel "With grace we will suffer, with grace we shall recover."

Re: Rod rest heads | ||

Hi Wurzel,
Mine were developed well before the front runner appeared. However, I bought a couple of front runners for my tripod and had the problems you mentioned. Think the threaded portion on mine were stainless steel. Problem is with these is that they are knurled and then moulded around. Too much torque and they break out of the plastic - should either have deeper knurls or knurled and pinned to stop this. I also found that the thread on mine was very tight which I loosened up by running a 3/8" bsf die down the thread. The taper on my heads are fine tuned to match the bankstick head. The latex is in fact inserted to a depth of a couple of mm at both ends to minimise the chance of line getting caught behind the insert. Cheers Bob |

which, I suppose, brings me to Mink - | ||

- the ones I trapped when living on a farm with a bit of river many years ago. Being a man not to let stuff go to waste, a few years later, wondering what to do with the pelts (too good for fly-tying), I got a seamstress lady to run up couple of sets of mink bras and knickers for a girlfriend. Definitelly a case, I see now, of "waste not, want much".

Bob,
Might have some off you (white with black) if you do a mini production thing. Really difficult to find good rod rests. I used to use the plain old gold label tackle "V" shaped front rests, but found them not very windproof and a bit flimsy. Wurzel "With grace we will suffer, with grace we shall recover."
