I am sure that the drops which come out of most essential oil bottles when bought from health suppliers are a whole lot smaller than for example the drops which come out of a nutrabaits pipette. Also what levels would you prefer? I am going on one (small?) drop per egg, but still think I can go lower and still get the result I am after? Andy

Posts: 231 (24/01/06 11:32) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Andy, Depends on the size of the egg to me. I use fresh free range large eggs, which are almost twice the size of a medium suermarket egg! This can completely throw you, but use the extra large eggs as a gauge.

Also I use two EOs in a 3:1 ratio, so at the moment always making a 4 large egg mix, which really is too much so need to look at changing that! Andy

Posts: 231 (24/01/06 11:47) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The droppers that come with, say, nutrabaits essential oils (the starndard brown chemist droppers) do seem to vary in size its true. One drop could be a full drop, but the next one with be half a bubble! I use these large clear plastic ones from my local tackle shop, think JB makes them. Before i put the drops in with the eggs i squeeze a bit out first (like a syringe ) and put the 2 or 3 required 'drips' in, this way they are consistent.

Maybe one of our physics experts could clear this one up. Adrian. (from the bunker under the stairs). The door is open, come on in, make yourself at home.

Posts: 3012 (24/01/06 12:25) andy davies administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I am meant to be a Physics expert that is generally true, but for a naturally forming drop, Ithink it does depend upon the 'applicator' but when somebody recomends 2 drops per pound or whatever, do we go by the Pipette drop size, or drop fromt he edge of a bottle (probably more your semi-classical drop ) Andy

Posts: 4690 (24/01/06 12:45) bob gill administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Without getting too scientific then the surface tension of the liquid, temperature and other factors will effect the actual drop volume/weight. For example, the dropping pipettes that I use for bait making (1.0ml in graduations of 0.01ml) will dispense 20 drops of water to the ml (0.05ml per drop) at room temperature - let's say 20C. For Black Pepper Essential Oil then it's almost twice this amount of 'drops' from the same pipette - so 0.025ml/drop. Using a Nutrabaits dropper then it's around 25 drops - so 0.04ml/drop. So a bit of a minefield...... Personally I use 0.05ml BPEO per large egg in some of my mixes. I've just run a check and these figures seem about right, but I'll wait until my other bottle of BPEO and other essential oils come up to room temperature and check the figures again. The safest method for consistency is to measure the volume of liquid rather than rely on drop size. Andy if you want a couple of these 1.0 ml pipettes then let me know. When I ponder on additives for a mix I nearly always quantities that will allow easy 'conversion' to smaller sized mixes. If this isn't practical (say for some really concentrated substances) then I find a suitable inert diluent. Cheers Bob

I am fairly happy for this season, but planning ahead to next year I would like to do things a little differently. Another question - would a really low dose of an EO be enough to provide the 'label' or do you prefer to add an 'artificial' flavour? Most food companies name their products as 'nature identical' or similar, which is natural enough for me, however bait manufacturers do not. Andy

People that I know using or have used milks for barbel have gone along broadly similar lines as well. Oh forgot some oil as well - this often aids bait handling as well. I've had a look at some more EO's and drop size and results are pretty similar for the five EO's tested. I obtained a range of 35 to 45 drops to 1ml all from a common pipette. Cheers Bob
