Size matters.. | ||
|
Hi Big man!
For me matey I would say -depends! On the Avon earlier in the season I was using 40mm baits with a paste wrap over the top, to counter the small chub. have also had good success on the Severn last winter as Tom R, the lads and myself were pre-bating hard boiled large baits to ensure barbel were picking them up. Saying that though, have caught equally sized fish with small shaved boilies fished in a pva bag of fragmented boilies (Stef H / Phil S trick). But any chub passing can be a problem, may be more effective with bait and wait scenario. One thing to be said for this cr*p weather, the threads get better All the best mucka, Mart |

Although I tend to use something around say 14mm, I have taken good fish on very small and quite large baits. I also vary the shape and paste wraps around a smallish bait can give added versatility.
Many years ago fishing the BA with luncheon meat and although I knew the fish were there indications were slight to say the least on the average chunk. Putting a very small bait on a hair (around 3mm 'cube') brought 3 reasonably sized fish. Will always make my 'steamies' up of various sizes - a one egg mix can consist of some 4 to 45mm in an average 12mm batch. You can always cut down the larger baits to suit anyway and flavour leach is usually better with cut down and shaved baits. So 4mm to 45 plus with boilies/steamies and 4mm to half a tin luncheon meat for starters. A tail of a lobworm to 6 on a size 6, a squatt to a large bunch of maggots........ Cheers Bob |

In summer when its low and clear i tend to fish small boilie or particle baits 10 mm and under.. even hemp on a hair, as i ve had fish spook at the sight of largish baits.
In winter i go for a larger bait of 20 mm boilie baits,to avoid "nusciance" fish, with a paste wrap. Big chunks of meat, plain or flavoured, on larger rivers to get more of a scent trail down river. |

Haven't tried it yet John but next season I am going to up the bait size to 20mm plus boiles and I'm gonna have a crack at using two 21mm hallies glued end to end on a hair - that should sort 'em out.

Hi John Mate.....I almost always use 22mil or thereabouts. The reason being that they seem to bring me success. Having said that, the nice fish I had the other day was on a 14mil and 22mil on the same hair..The old saying always used to be--Big baits for big fish..You ask for a reason..Mine is I almost always use hali pellets and that's the lagest I've found commercially..I think I would use larger if I could get them. I know I could use paste wrap, super glue etc..But i'm a lazy old git

hi,
i use a small 10 mm "home made" boilies, with a 6/8 inch piece of PVA string/tape with 3 or 4 broken boilies,or some paste of the same flavour strung out,the colder the water the less i put on the PVA.But sometimes i use a very small PVA bag with some pellets and broken boilies.I think it all depends on the type of river your fishing and how many fish there are in it,and the style of fishing you do. Im going to give it a go on sunday(i might be mad Cheers Ian |

Jim - for bigger Halibut Pellets - I think a company called Catfish something or other do 28mm or bigger - just googled Catfish Halibut Pellet 28mm - Leslies of Luiton have some My bait size varies from smallish 10mm mini boilies - although had no Barbel on them to large chunks of luncheon meat or garlic sausage in flood conditions - have had Barbel on them Cheers Graham BAF I walked across an empty land, I knew the pathway like the back of my hand. Had a well decent double in the Wye with 50mm plain l/meat one summer afternoon.
Considering the v/little amount of time I have spent using "big" baits should use more often if situation allows. Regards Mark |

Hi John,
Quite happy to use quarter of a tin of meat in one go, usually break a tin into 8 rough pieces, thread one up the line and stick the hook in the second. Seen several Avon regular who'd think this small!! Equally happy using a 6mm pellet or 3 maggots. I guess all that says is that I'll try anything Tight Lines Rob |

Hi John
I will generally use the smallest baits that i can get away with - my way of thinking that most of the barbels natural food is pretty small. My small baits are broken boilies or small pellets glued together. I will sometomes use bigger baits - an example was when i was on the teme this season where i was rolling big old lumps of meat through a lovely fast swim - i managed 4 barbel and 2 chub in about an hour - probably would have had more if i didnt run out of bait! Respect.... |

Hi John,
Particulaly in the summer I prefer very big baits, especially meat. One chap in the summer enquired how i fixed the knife and fork to the rig This helps when there are bream about. I have had Barbel of only about 3lb on enourmous pieces. Mark W |

Re: '' | ||

On big rivers as an ex match angler i start with smaller baits and work my way up to a bigger bait to hopefully find the bigger fish in the swim as the fish feed more confidently.
On smaller rivers i use bigger baits to try to deter smaller fish as said previously small barbel are quite capable of taking huge baits. atb malc |

Thanks guys, still aint found out what i am looking for but been much help so far,
basically i am trying to figure out how large a bait i can use to counter say 6lb barbel & under, or in other words just how big a bait can a fish of 8-12lbs handle and what type of consistancy ie hard, soft, in between, ie pellet, boily, paste wraps ect., just something i am toying around with in my head for a baiting program next season...j.w |

John
not realy much help, but seem to be going down same roads as yourself. Had some real Bream problems last October and used 3x 20ml pellets to warn them off,result was I still caught them but took them a little bit longer to get hooked up. regards kev |
