I was just wondering if it was ok to use fish(y) flavours when using John Baker's Supermilk base-mix, such as Alar Salar or shellfish essence etc
Not sure wether these flavours would combine ok with the base-mix?
Cheers,
Jez.

I suspect it would be OK. Personnally would go for a 'confectionary' type flavour, but did read of an interesting combination of fish flavours with a milk type mix in a chapter by Dave Green in JB's book.

I've heard that Nutrabaits Cheese Elite is good - makes a change from fishy - that's if you don't want to go creamy, fruity or confectionery.

Jez just wondering what made you choose supermilk as your base mix? I've been considering using it myself

I had read some good stuff about it, all about the high protein content etc and thought i'd give it a try really....
What flavours are you thinking of using with it if you don't mind me asking? Jez. |

Flavour not really and issue but whichever one you choose I would stick to a non oil based flavour if your intention is to fish this winter with it. Alar-salar is oil based btw.
As with all milk pros, there is not a lot of inherent smell to the basemix itself. Any flavour therefore will carry quite well in these mixes, so go steady on the levels, and don't boil the ass out of any boilies you plan on making. 30 seconds will do it. SM |

Re: BAIT: supermilk | ||

well i was going to use what Dave Green uses in the john baker book which is 20ml salmon oil, 2ml ala-salar and 2ml meatball in a six egg mix but I was going to reduce the amounts by half because I want the flavour to be very subtle. I'm hoping to use this as a long term bait, although I've just bought some waka's on advice from big john but I have no idea how effective they will be long term. I should imagine that because they are ready made and as such there is little you can do to them, there long term use will be limited. There are also 4 recipies in the JB book 2 for short term 2 for long term he uses ala salar, search 4, grilled bacon, anchovy extract etc. So i don't think it really matters a great deal just as long as you don't go mad with any of them. Cheese sounds like a good bet though.

Got to admit that i became interested in milk protein based bait after reading what Tony Miles has to say about them in elite barbel it's really worth a read if you haven't already with some sound advice on application

BFW shop is the best place mate, believe me it's the fastest service around. I have to say it's one of the best reads I ever had, I read it from cover to cover in about 8 hours, I just couldn't put it down. I can honestly say I've never read a book cover to cover in one sitting before and I've just started reading it again. Tony Miles if your watching you did a fantastic job

Jezz, they don't leak out of the bait as well in low temps. They still work fine but when it gets cold you need all the attraction your bait can muster.

Jez are you mostly fishing the Thames? Or elsewhere too? IMO it would be very expensive to make it worthwhile on the Thames, and possibly a milk based bait wouldnt be the best option?
Agreed re Tony's book. I ended up with two copies Andy |

Not detracting from Tony's success on milk proteins on the Gt.Ouse, but all the same barbel were also caught on plain Luncheon Meat/Spam etc in similar conditions. It was more a matter of who got there first when the conditions came right...Ray

Hi Jaz...
I put a bait together at the start of this season using supermilk gold as the base mix the label I used was 1ml caviar and 1ml cranberry to a six egg mix. Supermilk rolls up really nicely but beware not to add too much powder to the eggs too quickly or it will catch you out by drying up,resulting in the baits "cracking".Also as Stuart said do not over boil or you will take all the attractors/goodness out of the bait,I only boiled for 20 seconds and found this ample. Catching fish on a bait you put together does give you a lot of pleasure but I must add at this point HNV baits are very expensive to formulate and with so many excellent ready-mades on the market is it worth the expence? A friend of mine was also on the same HNV bait as me and although he caught on the bait,BFW wakkas started to out fish it We had planned to use the HNV bait all season hoping to see it getting stronger as more was introduced to the stretch we were fishing, unfortunately I was sidetracked by the "darkside" and have only barbel fished four times this season... sorry Mark Chris...

Try steaming as opposed to boiling.
Leaves a lightly skinned bait but it varies so much from bait to bait how long to steam that it is up to you to experiment. One tip would be never to start steaming till the water is boiling if not using a vegetable/rice steamer, they are the way to go though. If using a commercial milk bait I find it very hard to look any further than Nutrabaits Hi Nu Val. It is exactly the same as when I first opened a packet over 14 years ago. Cheers

Andy,
I know a common friend who has had the same packet for 14 years.. On a more serious note. No one here has talked about amounts of bait you should be putting in with milks......? Ian |
