I got a season and a bit out of mine. Apologies for all the Sportfish compnay links (I don't use the firm these days); it's just that they have a readily accessible online catalogue.

Spend lots of money and your a mug IMO, the military type ones are designed to hug the body so that when your running into battle it doesn't bounce about as you can see, certainly not nessacary when fishing, or at least i hope it isn't

But just look how flyfishers get "tooled up" - www.williamjoseph.net/ - whether they need to or not (though, some of the places that I have fished, mostly abroad, absolutely require you to...) Money, you see? Hmm... Maybe why, when a decent number of Wessex salmon make their return, Wessex barbel-fishers will be out on their impecunious, ill-dressed arses... Bad, bad, BAD!

By the above I meant that you HAVE to dress in / use top-quality clothing / equipment, or you might very well DIE! Failing death, you certainly won't be catching very much if your cheapo gear is constantly falling apart on you. Our temperate British climate and generally fairly placid, amenable, user-friendly rivers (with the exception of SOME salmon rivers, especially in spring and late autumn) permit us to get away with fishing in gear - waders, boots, jackets, vests, general clothing etc - that many overseas fishers would shake their heads at, and perhaps even consider a death trap. Roll on summer!
