I accidently posted that before I finished writing it
The majority of the time on the river I wander about and was thinking of a new "decent" waistcoat for the summer - any recomendations on brands or specific ones? |

I've often thought of trying to switch to a waist coat in an attempt to ditch my bag. I notice that John Wilson always seems to wear one and even fits a set of Avons in them somewhere. Not sure what make it is that he wears but it looks good....

The one he wears is a masterline one "John Wilson Wonderer"
The one I have at the moment is a masterline one - here the one I have www.goldsworthangling.co....stcoat.jpg trouble is the zip is knackered plus Ive had it years. Time for a new one I think. I think that particular one might be discontinued. |

Hmmm interesting and tried some in my time. Best lightweight one I have is a Rohan - lightweight, fast wicking but expensive if you have to pay full whack - got a brand new pair on ebay a couple of years ago for sub £20 each. However, not designed with true fishing in mind.
Still got a Snowbee fly fishing one which is good. Depends on the payload you want to carry or not. Personally, ditched the rucksack for heavier duty vest and went Tactical Vest. Get them in various price brackets 20 to 100plus. Review of one I settled on in the reviews section HERE Cheers Bob |

Being also a flyfisher, I have / have had a number of these. They can be either a short-length "deep wading" type or a longer, more traditional type. They can cost cost from mere pennies right up up to really serious money. The Americans tend to make (or, at least, market - China- / Far-East-made, a lot of the stuff, now) the best. I used to have an Orvis "Super Takl Pak" (or some silly spelling); now I have a very expensive, but superb Simms vest (can't remember if it is the "Guide" model or the "Master").A short, multi-pocketed vest that can be worn with chest waders, and allows you to go in DEEP. Has a large pocket on the back that will store a waterproof jacket, too. Check out a few flyfishing retailing sites / catalogues ... the Simms and Patagonia brands are at top-end in terms of price and finish; Orvis and Columbia are cheaper yet good.

remember when you did that review, re-reading it looks like a good bit of kit. my trouble is that even if i did buy that i'd wanna take a rucksack too.... im terrible. kitchen sink comes to mind....
have a dpm field jacket, and did manage to fit all my tackle in the pockets of that, avons, sling, tackle, rig wallets..... but it just seemed abit uncomfortable. if you taking a bucket for your bait, pva, drinks n food and camera etc could be comprimised into that. but then you might aswell take a bag! anyone recommened a new bag!? just got a cotsworld roamer, and the mice decided to chew a hole in the bottom of it. |

I wear an old cheap Regatta waistcoat which cost £8 or 10 and have a Wychwood in reserve with which to replace it. I used to carry a set of Avons in the Regatta and wouldn't be without it even though having gone from a 38 to 42 chest over 25 years means the zip is now redundant. The Wychwood is a quality product bought some time ago but is not quite so versatile. I don't know if they still make it. However I still need a rucksack for bait, flask, reels etc as I don't carry assembled tackle to the bankl

I use the smaller bag pictured here www.foxint.com/catalogues...section=41
Its a Fox rig and bait carry all. Its got a hard bottom which you can house a Fox system tackle box. In the actual bag you have 2 insulated compartments which will keep your bait fresh if you put an ice pack in there with it. Also on the top of the bag as you can see you have a rig an bits wallet, very handy for putting things that you want to hand inside. |

I used to wear a waistcoat all the time in the 80's but when it gets a bit nippy at dusk or raining etc, you have to put a coat over it which makes it a bit inconvenient to reach some of the main pockets. I have since changed to large pocketed clip belts and a bum bag to carry all the accessories needed, worn on the 'outside' of the coat, or just around the waist if it is hot and sunny...Ray

Hello sir ray - I remember seeing you up the Old Mill in Aldermaston a few years back on such a nippy day, in the winter floods actually. I was rolling under the bridge and you and Guy came over to ask if I had anything, used to see him there most weeks. Must say rolling has a deafinetive edge over static fishing there.
Paul, I think the Simms ones look really good especially the olive one. |

One thing im suprised about is that Fox as far as I know didnt branch out there fishing clothing to specialist fly/course waistcoats. They dont appear to be doing there jackets anymore even which were the mutts nuts in my opinion. I still have one and its going strong.

I have used for some years a John Wilson Wanderer after seeing John wearing one. It has a great zipped pocket at the back for scales, weign sling and a couple of catapults. John spoke about it on one of his programmes. It was designed to suit both fly and coarse fishing. I particulary like the two forcep holders, one for a large pair and one a smaller pair. I have only been fly fishing twice and about to go again as my son now wants to take it up. I have to say it is not bad, but then again I haven't tried any others. I need to get a new one as a) it is starting to show its age and b) I have grown a little and now need a large as compared to a medium. Well it happens to all of us!
If you don't want to look like an army person I can highly recommend them. When I say its age, all I mean is it has lost a button from one of the appaulettes at the shoulder and have had difficult in finding the same ones. Maybe I will just have to change them to new ones. Also one of the forcep holders is starting to tear. Not much when you can consider I have had it for years. Keith |

I think fly waistcoats are pretty good - only trouble is most are designed for wading chest high.

It has to be denim, nothing like bringing the Quo back on the bankside

Hi
I know that you are after a waistcoat, but have you had a look at some of the ''stalker belts''? I bought a fox one and i have to say that it is very good for a bit of roaming. Respect.... |
