Posts: 1678 (20/01/06 12:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi , I am looking for a decent pair of boots that are comfortable (i tend to do a lot of walking) and waterproof and after reading a post by Longgone (thanks Bob ) i realised that the Berghaus boots could be the way to go. The reasons being such things as being Gore-tex lined making them appeal to me. The ones i have been looking at are the Raid GTX, the Explorer IV GTX and the GR20 Leather wide fitting GTX's. Does anybody have a pair and what ''model'' would you reccomend? Any help appreciated......

I can recommend Scarpa Ranger GTX - but these are expensive. I'd go for a pair with full grain leather uppers as they are easier to maintain than say Nubuck, brushed leather etc. What I have found is that older model pairs of any of the known makes appear frequently on e-bay - at quite good prices. However, you can't get to try them. There can be quite marked differences in the overall height (especially at the heel) and the cutaway at the back - so watch out. A year or so ago I picked up a pair of full grain leather, Goretex, Vibram Sole, brand new for £20 (I think retail of around £80) These were Trezeta and are known make and I found them great for walking and fishing. Much better to go to a hiking/outdoor shop rather than a fishing shop - you'll have better choice and probably get better quality. My experience of 'special angling' shoes are somewhat jaundiced. Now I just buy cheap pairs of Hi -Tec boots and double them up with Sealskinz socks. 100% waterproof and still cheaper than Berghaus!! Hope this helps, Big John

Are they above ankle height? From looking at the pics they look to be almost above so they would do me. I know what you mean about ''specialised angling boots'', i have heard plenty of bad things about them so am looking into some boots that actually ARE good. Any more help/views appreciated.....

What Bob says is totaly right whan he said " go for full grain leather uppers as they are easier to maintain than say Nubuck, brushed leather etc" I would recomend Lamberlan, I have a pair of full upper grain leather and I just have to wax them every once and a while and i can stand in water almost up to my ancle without and problem...there perfect. as bob said ebay do some great deals on boots that have been worn say twice..well worth a look... john.

Every time they are used, I coat them in Nikwax. Pure comfort is a must for me as I suffer badly from arthritis if any damp gets in.

Joe - the Scarpa Ranger GTX and Trezeta boots in picture below. Both have adequate height backs for general fishing use. Both measure around 6" from the base of the sole at the heel to the lowest point above the back of the foot. The Grey ones are the Scarpa's (£115) and Brown the £20 new Trezeta's from ebay. Both Vibram Soles, Full Grain Leather Uppers and Goretex and vey comfey. To be honest there's not a great deal in it comfort wise. The very reason I bought the Trezeta's was to save the Scarpa's rough fishing use - daft ain't it. Cheers Bob

Had my first pair for 8 years. Vibram sole which is replaceable. Berghaus are ok. Scarpas are excellent especially if you want to use them in conjunction with the Yeti gaiter system.

They are a German brand: Vorsprung Durch Technik etc. I've recently bought a pair of Meindl Borneo Pro MFS GTX boots for walking purposes and they are by far the best boots I have ever owned. Try before you buy, last shape tends to vary from make to make and country to country. Go to www.outdoorsmagic.com and read up. Personally, I wouldn't rate Berghaus and definitely would not go for fabric uppers: I had a pair of fabric/nubuck Brashers and the uppers fell to bits long before any substantial wear occurred on the sole.

I was happy with Hunter wellies before and I must say the Gortex boots are fantastic - comfortable, warm, grippy etc etc. My advice is go to Millets or similar and try on a few pairs to see which brand suits your feet - irrespective of cost if possible. You will be glad you did when you avoid blisters or cold feet. Chris

My wife swears by the leather Brashers (should do at £120) I bought her a year or more ago. She walks 8-10 miles ( unless she's fiddling the mileage on an expensive pedometer) minimum every day, rain, hail or snow. They still look perfect. When they fall apart, if ever, I'll work out the cost per mile. Can't praise them highly enough Regards Bob

Great buy! im not sure what model of boot i have, but im sure any made by Berghaus are great quality! Mark

Me too. Although to be completely up front, the first pair I bought developed a fault after about 18 months - they were replaced free of charge. Had the second pair for about three years now, starting to show signs of wear but a good couple of years left in them yet, I wear them for birding as well as fishing so they get plenty of use.

Posts: 32 (20/01/06 21:58) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	As a field archaeologist I spend a ridiculous amount of my time in the winter wading around ploughed fields in Wiltshire up to my backside in mud. Unless it's appalling wet I wear walking boots and gaiters for all my work, and it tend to be between 5 and 10 miles a day and 4 to 5 days a week for a couple of months at a time. As a result of this intensive "field-testing" I've reached certain conclusions about boots. They are:- 1. If you can afford it buy boots made from one piece of leather - the more stitches the more likely they are to leak; 2. Goretex boot liners are not really worth tuppence. Goretex is not designed to take the sort of creasing and wear created by walking. Even XCR gives up after a while 3. Buy boots with a high rubber rand running round then to protect the lower leather 4. Get a really waterproof boot. For me the best make around is Zamberlan, a pair of their old Trek-lites lasted me 10 years. Their Hydrobloc system is excellent if the leather is treated regularly 5. Vibram soles are essential. Most others wear out too soon So at the moment I'm using a pair of Zamberlans I bought in Ellis Brighams outlet store at Capel Curig teamed with a pair of Deerhunter's excellent gaiters. Sorel, a US winter boot mainufacturer do an ideal winter boot for UK fishing called the Conquest 2 but it's not imported over here. It's ideal being waterproof, insulated and of mid height. Choice of boots can make or break a day's fishing. Go for the best you can.

Nick, what ''model'' LOWA boot do you have? Is it the high ankle one (i think it is called the combat?) Bob, are the soles on the Scarpa's Vibram? Jusrt asking as form reading this, Vibram seems the way to go. Glosfisher, i have always thought of Gore-tex as THE best. Have you had problems with it then? Regards.....
