Posts: 1181 (13/12/05 21:16) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I have been told today that in the last week or two 3 barbel, 2 of which are good doubles have been found dead on my local river showing clear signs of Otter kill. The stretch in question has a very low density of barbel at the best of times and to loose these or any barbel to them is sad. Management of the otters in question is not, unfortunately an option, but I may take my dogs for a walk down there soon......

They do seem to be becoming more prolific with me getting ''sightings'' (one definate and plenty of ''signs'') and a few chub that i have been catching have had missing fins etc. They seem to be a problem on a few rivers now - including the stour where alot of big chub have fallen victim not to mention barbel.

About 3 seasons ago on the Wissey we had a seal for a few months. That did stop me fishing as it used to follow me about and stare at me, right in the eyes. Not many wild animals do that and quite unnerving.

To all others what a distresing sight was told earlier in the week that there had been a couple of big barbel out to the otters so decided to go take a look for myself, there in the edge lay a 13lbplus barbel dead with just its throat ripped out, several other skeletons of fish were also evident, these looked to be mostly chub by the looks of the remaining tail fin....... witnessed 4 otters enter the river within 20ft of me the week before,whilst fishing, unfortunatly the future not looking good for fishing, what with the otters hitting the big fish and comorants hitting the small fish where is it going to end, has been a definate decline in the fish stocks along this stretch of river over the last few seasons..

So far this year on speaking to other anglers on the Rivers Dane, Severn and Dove, quite a few have claimed to have seen lots of Otters, with some claiming to see them on a very regular basis. Now I fish the same stretches, and I haven't seen hide nor hair of an otter, but I have seen plenty of mink! Now I'm not trying to crap in everyone's cupboard here, as otters are on the increase (both released and natural re-colonisation); however in my experience, there's a lot of anglers out there, who cant tell the difference between mink and otters?

Otters have every right to take fish & us anglers have to put up with them - whilst it is a shame that a glorious fish has to go this way. You can't argue with the re-introduction of the most awesome wild animal on these shores, Otters are at the top of the predator heirarchy on the rivers & they deserve the upmost respect from us. It's another positive for us anglers that they are now surviving well on stretches that are run by fishing clubs & it is yet more evidence that conservation does go hand in hand with fishing Tom

I have seen a mother with two small cubs on one occasion and two adults (male and female) on another but generally they avoid "socialising" I'm with AT & Maxi, part of our natural world. Posts: 2713 (14/12/05 11:18) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi,any one see otters in the sixties and seventies,well here is another thing that i have to confess,in all the years ive been fishing the h.a and d.s i have never seen one,loads of mink in various places and cormerents,but no otters.if nature has a way of correcting the balance it doesnt seem to be doing it at the moment,perhaps the avon needs stocking with some eels,as they say in fishing feed them off,the otters that is.gone are the days when you could just cast in to a likely looking swim and catch a barbel.wish cac would drop there price of membership a little,because i wear out so many pairs of boots with all the walking,trying to spot fish.regards derek.
