Posts: 1170 (03/02/06 10:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None The last two times i have been out Grayling fishing i have hooked Barbel the first time a small fish of 4lb z that i landed but welcomed all the same and the second a 10lb+ fish that would not fit in my Grayling landing net thus lost. Both fish were hooked on double maggot in very cold conditions.The funny thing is the last 2 times i have been out Barbel fishing i hav'nt had a sniff. Are maggots an under estimated bait this time of year? Do you think it was just luck that i hooked Barbel? Do you think it might have been a moving bait that attracted them and would you consider using maggots seriously this time of year? atb malc

Posts: 1678 (03/02/06 11:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi , Sods law indeed I am with Mike where he says that you probably wouldnt have caught that fish had it been a static bait - i reckon that those maggots just ''drifting'' through were too much for it to resist - and of course it only has a few seconds to make up it mind about taking them, unlike a static bait. Respect....

Lovely morning, running a `pin and chubber through a pacey swim. A couple of grayling were caught but two barbel were hooked and lost I wouldn`t have even considered fishing for them in a shallow pacey swim at that time of year but there you go! By three methods we may learn the wisdom to catch barbel: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.-(Apologies to Confucius!)

Apologies if this takes the thread off subject a little but based on Malc's experience and Martyn's contribution too the thing I'm wondering is what are the barbel doing in "grayling swims" at this time of year? I've been on the middle severn a few times on baking hot summer days when you'd be hard pushed to get a bite in the normal pegs. During these periods plenty of fish get caught off the fast turbulent bits and I'd associated that with the fish moving to the oxygenated areas. Whilst there is some merit in that assumption, could it also be that the high atmospeheric pressure plays a part in this too? I can't seem to find the thread but didn't someone post something along these lines earlier in the week too? Strange really because most people say (I think) get on the slow deep bits in winter but maybe the place we really want to be when the pressure goes through the roof (irrespective of the time of year) is the fast shallow turbulent bits? Just a thought, anyone? All the best Mike

Luckily I had a big enough net. mind you it wasn't winter then. If I remember correctly, Mr Crabtree trotted a hookful of maggots for barbs. Mind you I could probably catch a record fish if I could draw that well. I have had so many conflicting pieces of advice, including that from an old boy who only ever trots maggots, and he reckons that if you feed correctly, you will catch the bits, but sooner or later the barbel will always move in. Mind you, not an easy method in the dark with frozen fingers. Phil Adams (trying to catch a barbel and lovin' it) All the gear, no idea!

Mike, Caught a couple of barbel in quite cold conditions with big Tom last week, in a wier pool which was the deepest or obviously slowest. Areas we'd normally avoid in the conditions. Same swim as my presvious coldest fish too. Food for thought I reckon $:\$ Mart

Posts: 2713 (07/02/06 11:20) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi,i seem to remember the great r.w saying that the temp of the river would be the same in shallow stretches as deeper ones,due to the flowing water in rivers mixing,so any slower sections out of the main flow,with a reasonable depth should be good,especially with the river going round an obsruction.cheers derek.

I remember taking the water temp in different areas at the Gt Weir (64F) then in the trammels (shallower 66F) and then at the Railway (deeper 70F) in the space of a couple of hours. If the sun was out, the water would warm up more quickly on the shallows and travel downstream. Below the sewage discharge pipe was also 2 degrees higher than above in winter. In low flows in summer and winter, the water temp will rise and drop more quickly from daylight thru nightime depending mainly on the fluctuating air temps..Ray "They're bigger than me but they keep my ears warm!" www.barbelshack.biz/
