hi,ok ill try and put it simply,rather than go round the houses.
bloodworms as we know is part of a barbels naterial food,as they can be seen{on clear rivers}grubbing about on the bottom,and stiring up silt and all minute grubs ect.not all of you are lucky enough to see barbel,so what i was thinking is this,the idea of using fake bloodworm skins on the hook is of course to disguise it,and this is my idea,of putting a redworm or simular on a hair. now the shuffle,as you know by now i fish the h.a,and there are plenty of swims where its shallow,so what i may do is,walk upstream from the actuall swim,onto the shallows and do the shuffle{no laughing please}with my feet,which will disturb the bottom and make the water cloudy,and may even send downstream insects ect,thats the idea anyway. i seem to remember d.w hanging up in a tree a piece of dead meat that was off,and full of maggots,which trickled downstream through his swim,a constant supply of bait.the book with that in was i think called favourite swims by f.j.taylor.cheers derek. |

hi,just had another thought,if any of you fish the royalty fishery,just go downstream of ray,and you wont have to bother stirring the silt up,as he sometimes wades out,so he does it for you.cheers derek.

Hi
Havent used the bloodworm baits for the barbel but have done for carp and tench, but despite them being cracked up to be the next ''wonder bait'' i found them pretty average. Also, some of the bloodworm glugs seemed pretty good, but the more i thought about it, the more i thought that why would they go for this dead preserved stuff than soe of the real thing..? Re the bloodworm hook-skins, i would have thought that the best you could hope for them to achieve is to break up the outline of the hook and cut out any glare as i think that they might look slightly large in comparison to a real bloodworm. Respect.... |

Re: bloodworm hookskins/blood worm boilies | ||

hi,joe i think your right there,the idea was just for covering the hook,but i thought a small red worm on a hair,might be worth trying,as i never see many eels about nowerdays,to get pestered with,as regards of disturbing the gravel,upstream of the actual swim,i will just tell you that i raked a swim out one day on the stour at parly,on the 15th of june,owing to the blanket weed,and loads and loads of cabbages,so i could get the rig in,as i was there all night,within half an hour,there where barbel in the swim i raked out,i ended up with two barbel and a 5lb chub,at the end of the day.cheers derek.

Hi
Derek, i reckon that your idea of using a bit of worm on the hair could do the trick....certainly different from what others would be using - might just bag you a biggun from the Avon this year As for live bloodworm, a mate of mine bought some (i think from an aquatics store) and they looked pretty good, though there were not a huge amount. The only problems were the price (you would need alot of them) and the fact that they did not seem to live very long - or we didnt keep them the right way I think PF Baits were selling blocks of frozen dead blood worms - they may even have been selling live ones, i'll have a check and post on here if i find anything. Respect.... |

Got it! | ||
|
Hi
Found it - on PF Baits website. ''FROZEN BLOODWORM After so many requests, we had to offer this in 1kg packs straight from the freezer. Just remember, it doesnt last long when its de-frosted, you have been warned. LIVE BLOODWORM These will be available by the Kg, they need to be pre-ordered 10 days in advance, and will only be available for collection. They come packed in newspaper and so long as they are kept cold they will last 10 days. We are looking at offering 3 types, Giant Bloodworm, Standard and a new darker Russian Bloodworm which is very active in cold conditions and is a bit smaller than the standard.'' Respect.... |

Helo Derek, I have not used these but the hanging of a dead sheep or other animal over the river has certianly been used by lots of mostly game fisherman over the last two hundered years, if not more. I am not sure but I think even Izaak mentions it in the bible. Hair rigging worms is diffficult and what I think you were asking origonally is disguising the hair. On this I don't know but I would use as stiff as hair as you could get awy with but use a material that is "invisible". I don'ty know if it would make a difference but if you are not confident or fish are not taking it must be worth a try. I would probably try using a flouro carbon hair as this is not so noticeable but stiff. Matthew. Just out of interest how long is your hair if you need to disguise it? I use short hairs. Am I doing something wrong?

Beware when using live blood worms.
When keeping an aquarium you can buy a perforated funnel in a floating ring in which the blood worm is supposed to bunch in a ball with their tails wiggling through the perforations. The fish supposedly suck them through the holes to eat them. The reality is that they do as above but then wiggle all the way through. If they are not intercepted by fish they disappear rapidly into the substrate. Never to be seen until you clean the gravel. Chris |

Re: Got it! | ||

hi chris i had no intention of using them as bait,but using a small red worm for a certain big fish,i wasnt joking about the shufflig of feet in the gravel,upstream of the swim,as that may dislodge some my nute creatures from the riverbed.
just another of my weird ideas thou.cheers derek. |

Re: Got it! | ||

Comments not directed at any one in particular Derek so no probs.
I did hear/read of someone who tried to fish blood worm in a perforated bag tied to the hook. Not totally sure but may be mentioned in Richard Walker's 'Still Water Angling'. Chris |

Re: Got it! | ||

Hi Chris
I think you will find that the small live [pink] worms purchased in aquarium shops are tubifex and 'are' worms whilst 'bloodworms', the deep red worms used by match anglers are the larva of the Chironomous midge. Dick Walker suggested that tubifex tied up in a small ball made from a ladies stocking might be worth trying. Mike |
