I was fishing on the Dorset Stour a few months ago and I had walked down to see if there were some swims to move to as my current spot was unproductive.
In between spotting one and then lugging my gear to the new spot, someone had set up opposite and was going to trot the far (my) bank.
He made it clear he did not want me to fish where I intended as he considered he had 'rights' to fish. I wasn't too bothered (and he was bigger than me
) and moved on, but wondered what happened to the half way rule - or is that only on lakes?

by a guy accompanied by his missus and daughters as I politely asked him if he wouldn't mind moving a little (there was a clear 50 metres) upstream as I was holding the swim next to me for a mate who was on his way. He eventually did comply but made sure if I ever made such a daring suggestion again I would be in for it 
the guy pegged opposite didnt look too pleased!
- but my own view is that I wouldn't fish opposite someone even on the Severn. There is enough empty bank after all.
