Bob the Barbus man, you have my sympathies, i am an old git who likes the English language and consider it a sacred form of communication, especially when written. The words at our disposal to describe things are immense and different words can convey different things when they almost mean the same thing - what i mean is, what context are these words being used in - fascinating stuff.. However, like others have said, time marches on and we add to the dictionary yearly whilst other words go out of fashion.
Just imagine how our language will look in say 300 years time. Christ, if we did'nt move on we would all be talking like Shakespear - eloquent as his words were, but hard going for ordinary conversation. Bob |

Much of the blame for poor spelling and gramar is down to the trendy rubbish, typically spurted out by lecturers at the time when I was at a teacher training college. Self expression was considered to be far more important than accuracy (out of fear of traumatising the sensitive little darlings), which is why there is now an entire generation of otherwise well educated people who are unable to communicate in written English. You only have to see how many people write "would of" instead of "would have" for an example of how little thought people put into what they are actually writing.

Yep Darren is right, text speak as it now seems to be known did originate in the early internet chat rooms. It was used for speed rather than for laziness. Same with the smilies.
