Ah yes, the old "clip round the ear". Makes me all tearfulr and sentimental. We had a German teacher called Hector Dreever who was famed for being deaf in one ear. I made the mistake of muttering "you deaf old git" as I passed him in the hall one day. To my shock/sutprise he immediately wheeled around and grabbed me by MY ear, leaning across he announced in dulcet tones, " Wrong ear laddie, wrong ear!". What followed was the"clip" to end all clips. My head was ringing for awhile , but I think the embarassement was worse. Neadless to say, "it didn't do me any harm" and was bloody hilarious to boot. Of course these days I could have retired at 14 from the lawsuit! Ah me, always the old romantic fool!

I think what is most annoying is that many of the abbreviations must save the person who is typing them mere milliseconds and they give out the message that the person is being either discourteous or just bone idle. It's all down to good manners really.
Dyslexia is very rare and is now used as a cover up for a simple inability or reluctance to spell correctly. A true dyslexic would probably find it more difficult to use text language than conventional spelling. I have my own simple remedy if anyone uses text speak in an email to me at work - I just delete it. |

Mr Sharpe either you are a fool or a wind up merchant. Dyslexia is not rare it is as common as muck. Dyslexia is not a cover-up you pontificating git. Dyslexia has many and varied forms. Mine is word blindness in anything greater than a character set of 4 so for me text language is a bit of a doodle. I learned some computer languages wit grater ease than I learned English.
Mr sheize you are absolutely right I did have a go and it was somewhat unwarranted and for that I apologise. But as I said to you at the time after a lifetime of idiots like Sharp taking the pi55 I tend to be a bit defensive. After 53 years the joke is wearing a bit thin Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach that man to fish and he will buy a silly hat. Toodle Pip Kevin. |

Re: Text talk | ||

All,
I rest my case. Some people don't understand it, many people don't want it & there is no place for it, except maybe on the mobile telephone. In that instance it could be considered a time(?) & possibly a cost saving excuse! Personally I think it is just lazy and, if it is allowed to creep into everyday writing on sites like this, it will devalue our written language. Just for the record, despite comments made, I did not go to university or even a grammar school. I have no problem with poor spelling, bad punctuation caused by dyslexia or any other reason. If someone takes the trouble to write then will do them the respect & read it. Yours, against deteriorating standards in this & on the bankside, Bob PS. I'm off to catch some barbel! |

As long as someone gets their meaning across, i can't see there being too much of a problem.
We do not all need to be the same to get along, do we? It's not my favourite method of communication but if it's what floats your boat and you find it easier and more comfortable using text chat and it is understandable, no worries from me. I think that a little bit of compromise and patience with others is required. Tony

Just think how many youngsters, who are looking in on this site, who that way of typing is first nature to, will be put off posting by the attitude of some on here
For god sake, its not that important. Take it for what it is, a shortening of our language, something that has gone on for centuries. So what! Anyone who says "hi" instead of "hello" or "bye" instead of "good bye" is guilty of the same. Steve Out of the darkness, cometh the light.
