This is a plain and simple request for polite and intelligent imformation\opinions regarding the rig I intend to start off with when I finally get back on the bank. I've read with interest a great deal of the threads regarding main lines and terminal tackle but being an ex matchman I just can't shake off the habits of a lifetime, namely, fish as fine and simple as possible. Matchmen fish for any bite, barbelmen fish for barbel bites and need to be as selective as possible i.e. your after one species and the style has evolved with that end in mind. Plus of course it's big (hopefully) and pretty powerful.
Anyway this is the rig. Mainline 10-12lb mono tied to 6-8lb mono hooklength which will act as the weak link. The paternoster is composed of a sliding knot (Billy Lane with a few more turns), with one end, nearest the hook, left long enough to tie a lead\feeder on. Distance between s\knot and feeder 3"-4". I will be fishing the Severn, on the Upton side, from a hundred yards upstream of the bridge to one and a half miles below at a maximum of two rods out. The waters belong to Upton Angling Club and the Severn Trent Water Authority free fishing stretch, where I have witnessed barbel caught over 14lb's although that was four or five years ago. The s\knot allows me to change the distance between feeder and hook at will. It's dead simple and has caught a lot of fish over the years and doesn't tangle unless retrieved at ninety miles an hour.
I'd like your comments on what you think will\won't work and why, and reason(s) for saying so, with any mods, especially from those who may have fished for barbel with the same\nearly the same set up, and who will, of course, be speaking from experience, which will be doubly appreciated. For those who will have been sharpening their knives long before the end I will just say that George Bernard Shaw once said "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit". I'm new to exclusively fishing for barbel so I'm hear to, hopefully, learn from my betters.
Regards Bob
