Any one offer some help on location at this time of year. I understand the fish move to deeper water; why is this as water temp should be consistant through out the river therefore why would they move to deeper water? I could understand that using up less energy in cold water against the current would be advantageous, but what about sheltered areas in the shallows where they can be holed up out of the flow. Should I rethink location in winter completely or just look for the more sheltered spots in the usual summer locations.

hi,undercut banks and slightly slower flow if the river is carrying extra water,any obstruction in the river where there is slower water behind,and a nice piece of smelly cooked chipolata sausage,believe me it works,hope this helps you.derek.

Its all about speed of flow and temperature, look for a flow of about walking pace in good conditions, good summer swims arnt good winter swims and vice versa, also the waters viscosity changes i.e it becomes thicker as it gets colder, coupled with the fact that the fish become lethargic, means
something a bit slower than this would be about right as it cools down. It is not that they look for deeper water, more that they look for slower , water, throw in a feature, and thats a good swim. I would'nt fish the slacks except for Chub or in very cold conditons when after a week or two they might feed. Cookie I'll be back. |
