Small barbel are often as difficult to catch, as the bigger ones.
My smallest barbel was approximatley 3oz caught on the river blythe, about 7 years ago.
Has anybody had one smaller?????
Please let me know

I have often wonder, what would be the smallest barbel ever caught. We all ways go on about the big ones, and the near double, but never the small ones.

I used to catch small ones floatfishing on the Lea at Kings Weir, they were only Gudgeon sized, so probably about 10 or 12 fish to the pound, that would make them not much more than an ounce but I never bothered to weigh one.

I had my smallest Barbel (with the exception of a foul-hooked fish a while ago) last Saturday - 6lbs exactly!
Not really in the spirit of the thread I know... :-) Declan |

I have caught loads of gudgeon sized barbel on a Severn wierpool but they would only take tiny pieces of meat.

It was about 2" long...came in a polystrene box with 19 others from some bloke on Ebay.....
Whooops! Only kidding.... 4oz on a trotted red maggot from Ringwood Fishery on the Hants Avon...fought like a 2lb chub...typical tiny barbel behaviour...a touch of "little man syndrome"...they want to take on the world! Also had a tiddler off the Dee ...same sort of fight DT |

A Great Ouse giant of 4lb last weekend, I was very surprised as I thought they were born bigger than that in the Ouse.

Stewart - are you sure your scales don't need calibrating? I can't believe you've had one that small!!

No Declan its true, it was strange putting a fish that small in the weigh sling, but I was intrigued to see just how much it wouldn't weigh and also to find out if it was a 'pb' as my previous smallest was a 5. Had another Ouse 'tiddler' yesterday of 8.12 too, looks like the doubles have gone into hiding for me, still very glad to be catching though.

Hopefully they've been hiding from you 'cause they're saving themselves for me tomorrow!

Think your probably right Declan, isn't that The luck of the Oirish. Have you had many more Ivel doubles since your red letter day?

Re: smallest | ||

I haven't spent much time on the Ivel recently Stewart (a couple of short sessions, no Barbel)..
Since I had my `double-double' session on the Ouse i've turned my attentions (and capacity to blank) to this river! `Oirish' luck? You must be kidding! Declan |

I'm lucky enough to know of a couple of swims on the Kennet which regularly throw up tiddlers. I know I've posted this pic up before - tis one of my favs though....
