First Barbel? |

Hi,i was hoping to catch my first barbel next year and i was wondering what would be the best river to target in your opinion?.I am in Scotland and unfortunately (apart from a few illegally stocked fish)we do not have any barbel up here.I am a fairly competant angler having caught a few decent sized perch, pike, carp and grayling,but would dearly love to catch a barbel as a few guys up here have been down and caught a few and reckon their the hardest fighting fish they have caught.I,m not looking for swims or monster fish just the best chance to catch a barbel as several hours travel is involved.I have been told to try the severn at bridgenorth?,any help gratefully received.thanks.

No probs Richie...it took me a while to catch my first barbel....about 24 years l think... Theres no fight like a barbel in flowing water..other than a salmon .... Must be very frustrating for you in Scotland with no barbel rivers.. Anyway mate....if you want to come down next season...let me know.... Cheers..and good greetings for the coming festive season mate... MOOKIE.. |

Quote: Greeting Rich, I'm sorry if you think we are tight with our info. I think it was more a case of expecting those up Narf to give you a reply as Scotland is a long way from most of us. As everyone is kinda busy this time of year the board can be a little slow. If it's barbel info you require then you have come to the font of all (read most) knowledge. The guys here share/have more expertise than you can shake a stick at and most of it is in the archives and the Report threads. I'm sure you don't expect written info on exactly what swim to fish and the exact bait to use. Not only would it be very unwise to post such info on such a popular site but it would take all the fun out of it as well. Here's to your first Golden Rocket. Silk

Jump onto the M6 and head south to the Ribble (2 hrs 30 min) from Glasgow. The Ribble is now one of the most prolific Barbel Rivers in the country and turns up many doubles each season.
Not sure about day ticket stretches though? Neil |

Wharfe | ||

If you just want to catch a barbel then the Wharfe around Boston Spa/Newton Kyme has to be one of the most prolific stretches in the north of England. It's only 5 mins from the A1 near Wetherby and about 3 hours drive from Glasgow. Loads of fish in the 4-8lb bracket and a few double lurking. I'd be more than happy to accompany you once it warms up.
