I use the word brave merely because of the low water temperature. I went piking and still blanked. Still, I have set a target of 100 bird species this year whilst angling and today I got the ball rolling with 16. I'm a novice, so a couple of them (Twite and Siskin) had me searching my identification book to see what they were. Check out my weekly angling journal www.anglingdiary.com

If I may make so bold as to offer a few to look out for, which I spotted last year, it may, (or maynot), help you in your quest..There was Anne,Julie,Kath, Brender,Sue,Tracey,Caroline,Monique,Daphney and Janet.. There's ten to get you on your way...Hope it helps a little. . Oh! by the way I hope you have'nt done anything to upset the "Boss" lately, and we're getting paid back with this cold weather!! ...A Very Happy New Year to your good-self, And good luck on the fishing front..Kind regards...Jim...

If yes then your Twite may have been Redpoll (They often form winter flocks together, feeding in birch and alder)? Twite are becoming increasing rare; they breed on high moor land (Mostly Scotland) and winter at lower levels, especially around saltmarsh. Another common relative seen around farm land are Linnets, with the females somewhat resembling Twite. Did intend going on my first Barbel session tomorrow; however an American Robin has turned up in Grimsby, which has to take priority as it now getting hard to add new birds to my list . Cheers, Neil

Posts: 778 (02/01/04 14:44) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Jim, talking of birds in the Severn valley - about 3 years ago I was fishing on the lower Severn one evening, minding my own business when up comes the disco boat. I was spotted by a few young ladies on board. I think they may have had too much too drink because not only did they start shouting rude things at me, but they also started to well, shall I say, display certain body parts at me me as well. Neil, the Siskin and Twite weren't together. They were the two birds that I did struggle with as far as identification was concerned. Fortunately they did stay around a while and I'm fairly, well, hopefully, slightly, sort of confident that it was a Twite. Posts: 916 (02/01/04 16:05) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	You should've been so lucky Stewart ..Look's like I'll have to fish where you do this year Although the old memorie's not what it used to be so I most likely would have to ask you to give me an explanation of what I was seeing ..We get a lot of Siskins in the Bewdley area..Your Twait's a new one on me though...When we used to Breed, Hunt and show Beagles, we named one litter after birds. The only dog amongst them we named Siskin...(there's a bit of useless information for you!).. Cheers..........Jim...............

I was given mine as a puppy by neighbours - as a Christmas present (we fell out a while later). Was a lovely dog, but what dreadfull habits - spent most of one Christmas under our bed with the remains of the Turkey carcass that he had stolen. Took us nearly 2 days before we could get him out . Only dog that could get up onto a fired up Rayburn and steal a pound of frozen mince meat (defrosting) - and eat it. As for hunting when taken for a walk, hardly ever saw him if the lead came off. Had a thing about stealing womens underwear and hiding it - only just met my "wife to be" at the time - I think she was a bit suspicious of my habits . "It was the dog - honest". All a long time ago now - but he still haunts my dreams Matt.

Posts: 916 (02/01/04 17:18) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Proberbley not the right place for these tales Matt, but that about the stealing reminded me of Siskin...We had to find a new home for him because he started getting a little nasty with the others..He went to live at Tenbury on a small holding..He used to do the daily rounds with the local game keeper...Anyway the friend we let have him, got a bit upset the one day, when Siskin had a little chew at somthing he should'nt have, while my friend and his wife were out..So Siskin was confined to the garage..Now this dog used to sulk, and I mean big time sulking..Further more if upset would eventually get his own back...Now friend Des: had spent two or three days digging his very large back garden ready for the vegetable planting...This action was manor from heaven for our Siskin..Just the opportunity he'd been waiting for...... The next time Des and wife left him on his own it was pay back time.....He took one of Des's brand new golf shoe's from the garage and burried it in the newly dug back garden, and refused point blank to show him where! Consequence of that was, a complete garden redig to find said shoe.....When poor old Siskin was comming to the end of his day's. He went out one morning for his usual tour with the game keeper and what was unusual him just vanished into the under growth and refused to come to the keeper's call...Des: and the keeper spent the rest of the day searching for Siskin, and when they found him, he had died...The keeper reckond the dog knew it's time had come, and just wanted to meet his maker in peace....
