Posts: 916 (20/11/03 17:37) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi All, I'm sure this subject must have been raised before, but I can't remember seeing it....I have just recieved the "Tightlines" catalogue..In it they are advertising the "Wavehopper" life jacket at £54-99, that's £40-00 off the r.r.p...It's now aproaching the time of year of slippery bank's, and high and cold water...After witnessing a near fatality to one of the cutting out team, on a swollen River Teme, And as I fish alone quite a lot, I've decided to buy a life jacket.. Does anyone have experience of this product, or any other? Cheer's Jim...........

Good idea though on slippery banks with river in spate. Don't forget to tie yourself to a tree though, otherwise you'll be all the way down to Westonsupermare before you can say, George Bush ain't welcome!

I bought the Fox automatic self inflating type (around £80 but well worth it to save your life) and use it when fishing difficult conditions. Basically if you go into the water, above a couple of inches above the bottom of the jacket it automatically inflates - it also has a manual pull cord and 'mouth blow up' tube. It's compact and fairly comfortable to wear. It's green but on inflation has some high visibility panels that show. The automatic activation device is well shielded from accidental inflation that could be caused by rain. There are other makes around - one by Harrison even comes in camo. Watch the ratings (lift) on some types and also be aware of your weight. Don't wrap it up in layers of clothing to make it fully waterproof under your jacket etc as if water can't reach it, it won't activate in an emergency. Cheers Bob

Last year whilst trying to fish a flooded St Pats I tried to negotiate a barbed wire fence. The stile was under about four feet of water so I decided to walk towards the river and go around the end of the fence. Big mistake! I slid down a muddy bank and nearly poohed myself as my waders stated filling up. I grabbed hold of the fence and pulled myself up. I cut my hand on the barbed wire and was totally drenched but I had a lucky escape. Fortunately the only tackle I had was a rod, net & bucket which were all retrieved but I learnt a lesson that day I can tell you! So I too am looking for a lifejacket this winter. I have looked at the Fox at £90 which I believe is subsidised by fox (actual cost £130 - in memory of Keith Sellick who drowned at Savay), or the Harrison at £100. Jim - sounds interesting. I once went arse over tit into the kennet one evening about 10pm. Totally crapped myself! Fortunately, it was the end of summer and levels were low - managed to drag myself out. I can laugh about it now - fortunately $:\$ Had to drag my mate (Barbel Revisted) out as well when he attempted to land a fish for me from a high-bank swim. Fortunately, that was summer as well so he dodged a bullet too. It doesn't bear thinking about what would happen if that occured during January or February with the river in a torrent Might have to seriously think about my safety in future - but it can never happen to me - can it?

I think you get a far better deal by going to a boat place than such as fox, come in green or black too. Sorry but I have lost the details of the supplier.

Posts: 466 (21/11/03 23:04) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	As a lure angler, I fish from a boat almost once a week (when possible) and I can say that none of the serious boat anglers wear Fox life jackets. They are prone to going off by themselves after they get damp. This has happened in the garage, in the car ( big fright while at motorway speeds too! ) and they are hideously overpriced just to have a green outer colour and a silly logo. I bought a pair of good Lalizas 150N auto-inflate ones at a chandler for about 50 quid each, they are a fairly dark blue, and so far have never gone of by accident. A mate dropped one in the margins and it went off in about three seconds, so at least I know they work. A re-arm kit cost about 15 quid, also at a chandlers. SInce buying those a few years back, a UK based supplier has started called Cheap Life Jackets. They do fully CE approved jackets of all sorts of sizes and styles, and also have a dark blue and a green available. Their equivalent is just £42, with re-arm kits at £10. I have met the guys who run it, and I have seen the product, and I kow what I would buy next time, it looks really good. I have bought spares for my jackets from them too. They also do a simple 50N anglers bouyancy aid, that looks a bit like a fly fishing vest for between £35 and 37 depending on size. No web site at the moment, but telephone is 01922-419214. As for accidental inflation, like I say, I have had no trouble, Fox ones have gone off, but the only systen guaranteed not to go off in the rain is the Hammar inflation system, but that gets really pricy, and is probably not worth it unless you plan to boat fish.

Posts: 8599 (22/11/03 03:19) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Just one word of warning guys, even with an inflated lifejacket on when the powerful rivers are running high even lifejackets wont keep you above water in a lot of circumstances, Better off with one & even better off staying on firm ground whizzing down a river like the wye in full flood means somewhere along the way your gonna get a few hefty knocks on the nut from the rocks which aint exactly a healthy pastime ....j.w (stay safe the lot of you)

Posts: 184 (22/11/03 15:14) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	all, we use the crewsaver ones at work and these seem pretty good, however regardless of make you should give a check once in a while. chk cylinder is in tact. chk the paper washer (thats what activates it on immersion). chk manual hammer/ needle mechanism is working ok. blow it up manually (through the mouth piece) and leave it for 24hrs - 30mins should show any serious defects. check the fabric, straps and stitching for signs of damage or wear. check the joints (mouthpiece & inflator head) to ensure they are sound. all ok, then re pack it same way it came apart. NEVER wear anything over the top. best way to dry them is to blow it up. and sometimes they do go off by themselves. be safe rob
