Any one know of anywhere i can find length/weight/age scale to try and age a barbel? Or better still can any of you tell me how long a 12lb barbel has lived for? Cheers

hi BH i think this was brought up a couple of months or so back, Rollin Ray Walton was kind enough to answer a lot
about it and was informative, its in the archives somewhere but dont ask me mate as i just bumble about on this computer stuff  but its there somewhere in the not too distant past...j.w

Not much help myself either, but age and weight are not greatly connected. Depends on environment as to weight achieved / age. Like trees they have good years growth, and bad. Unlike trees the bio diversity plays a more crucial roll. A Barbels weight can also vary much throughout the season. An example from this season, an 8-12, became 10 dead in two months ! Jon mentioned some Barbely facts, as I remember it was fish pics, of the same fish over some forty years. Which maybe some insight. Cheers Dick |

I have read before that it usually takes 10 years to reach double figures, but loads of variables - and this was before all the HNV baits were in great use. Martin hooper describes the life of one or two fish in his book.
But thes days anything is possible, the Taff is a prime example, I am not sure of the exact numbers, but these fish I think have reached 12+ in less than 8 years I think. Andy |
