I was actually told that a bed of hempseed was the best plan.
I was told to keep well down and stay out of sight. Then feed loose hemp into the top of the chosen run or ball some in with dark/black groundbait. I was then told to wait a few minutes to allow Barbs to find the free offerings.
I was also advised to fish an open-ended swimfeeder loaded with crushed hemp, perhaps "Frenzied hemp", some dark crumb or even loose bank soil, some freebies like maggot, luncheon meat, casters, pellets etc. (sound about right?), a 12 inch plus hooklength (depending on bite ferocity) all on a running leger, preferably as free running as possible. A John Roberts run ring with a snap-link for quick feeder changing was suggested. I have loads of these from Pike fishing.
Fishing with the rod up high, beachcaster style on two rests was suggested. I was told Barbel will quickly reject a bait if ANY resistance was felt and the rod position would help minimise drag and allow for the lightest weight hold possible. Lifting and repositioning the bait a few inches was supposed to be easier this way. Sounds a lot like Trout/Salmon fishing in that sense.
Someone even suggested holding the rod and touch legering because Barbel can hoover over a bait and gob it long before the rod shows any action. I don't want to deep hook fish you understand.
Does this sound like Barbel fishing and should this advice work?
If it sounds good then thats fine. If you think a few points could be improved on or you think I should try a different approach, by all means say so.

By the way....which hook type and size do you find most productive?

No fluff chuckers round that neck of the woods. They all tend to stay further upstream round the Leadhills etc.
I going to try for a few species in the River. The Coarse fishing round the Clyde is practically untapped since noone believes fish can survive in it. It is probably the cleanest it has been in the last 100 years and the Coarse fish have been in there for 15 years I think...and unhindered. I,m going to fish from the City Centre upto Wishaw over a few sessions.
