Would this book be worth much?
A guy at work has given it to me. Am happy to accept it, but not if it's valuable.
Great b&w picture of young Ray Walton.
Cheers Neil

Hi guys
Would this book be worth much? A guy at work has given it to me. Am happy to accept it, but not if it's valuable. Great b&w picture of young Ray Walton. Cheers Neil |

1st Edition in good condition IS worth a bob or two (well £40 -£60).

Hi Neil,
Accept with grace, and don't give him the chance to change his mind! The book is valuable and not just in monetary terms. Many of the questions raised here are covered in this book, and Fred has a very convincing way in putting across his views. Also, the book is out of print and so is worth what anyone is prepared to pay. I'm hoping to come along to the NEC with Fred, so bring it along, get Fred to sign it and start him off on some of his pet subjects. I know Fred is working on another book which I am sure he will get finished in the not too distant future. It will cover his life and I can assure you all it will be a must read when it eventually sees the light of day. Best wishes to all for the last week of the season. |

Sorry Steve, don't agree - curiosity value, maybe!
For information, by today's standards it's basic, though not irrelevant in parts. Even when I read it the first time, I seem to remember feeling it wasn't much cop a bit wooly and psuedo-scientific. If you're relatively new to barbel angling it might shed some light on a few things, and it might give you a few bum-steers on others. I've got a reprint which I wouldn't part with simply because it'll only increase in value to collectors! Simon |

Thanks Simon.
The one I have is a reprint from 1990. To make me feel better what would you reckon it'd be worth now? Like to do right by the guy who gave it me. Cheers Neil |

Neil,
Give him £20 and you'd be doing the decent thing - assuming it's in reasonable condition! You might be in front by a tenner, but so what - he wants shot of it anyway! Look at it as an investment. Simon |

I have to disagree with you about being out of date and only worth curiosity value. I have fished with Fred and he still fishes in the way he describes in his book and still outcatches many anglers. Just because it is not all about boilies, pastes and modern rigs and high tec lines does not mean that the methods are out of date and ineffective. I know that if I still get as much enjoyment out of catching barbel as Fred does after all these years then I will be a happy man. It sounds like in your mind - anything that has not been written in the last 12 months is dated and of no-use and on that I have to disagree. Tony |

Did you miss the word "not" in your last paragraph or am I missing something? Neil |
