Posts: 657 (14/01/03 13:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None For the last two seasons, from October until March I have been fishing for Chub. " Big Chub " I have been out in just about every type of weather condition you could think off, often at night. And not my usual two buzzer set up, this is a back to basic's, using an old John Wilson Quiver Tip and a Starlight. The reason for this, I realised I was bouncing of lots of those, very quick Chub type bites without making contact. So what do you think it is that " Drives " us on, to catch these big fish, or at least try to catch them. Bob

Posts: 2410 (14/01/03 13:46) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Bob,think its the "challenge" to do "better" than youve done before,and the "YES" factor when you succede in what youve been striving to do for maybe sometime.Also the feelgood factor when your results are "Better" than the average angler who "doesent" put in the work needed for success.Some folk just strive more than others,to do well in thier chosen field. Havent recently myself,not done to well,but have acheived my "own" targets this season,and that was to catch some barbel, this done,my aim is for a double,if it dont come to soon,will just keep at it ,till it does.So its a will to improve ,that spurs me onward.Sometimes the longer you wait for good results the better you feel when you are successful,one of my other hobbies Fuchsia hybriisation,took me three years,and about 300 cross pollinations,to get my first fuchsia i was able to name,but worth the wait,as now its on sale all over the country. I was damn lucky last season.......caught my first 2 barbel in 30 years of trying.......then had 2 new personal bests.......chub 4lb 4oz.....not a monster but big enough...and a eel....3lb 4oz....... All from free stretches ......so theres no harm in trying to better yourself......it just makes you greedy for better things in the future...... Cheers MOOKIE......

As I sat quitely wondering why I had not tried the spot before, in all my time at the Green, a " Munkjack "( spelling ) came within 3ft off me. At the time I was fishing 6lb line and a great big bit of Flake, bang over goes the rod tip and I'm attached to a more than unhappy Barbel. No contest really, he did me good and proper, fortunately I was using a barbless hook, so I dont think it will take long before he get's rid of it. The Robins and Blackbirds are so tame now at the Green you can feed some of them by hand. There is more to fishing than fishing. Bob

There is something about relaxing by the river or lake that just takes away the thoughts you have to deal with on a day to day basis to exist. All of a sudden that insistent niggle about finding the best/cheapest insurance quote doesn't matter. That problem at work is not that critical. All that matters is sitting there and possibly catching. Is that all ? Does that explain it ? No, not by a long way. Catching does matter. For me it has always been about trying to stretch myself by attempting to catch bigger fish. These are bigger fish to me not nationally or compared to anybody else as that does not particularly bother me. I just have to try. There is part of my personality that has always demanded that of me and there are times I would rather it did not ! Cheers Andy

Posts: 1814 (15/01/03 05:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Couldn't agree more Andy.I learned a lot this year on the Hants Avon and hopefully next I will put what I've learned into practice by catching bigger and more fish,but whatever happens I know I will still enjoy thouroughly because to me also the most important thing is being there.Do you know sometimes this year I have been alone all day,not a soul in sight(not everyones cup of tea),looking up at the buzzards,kestrels and watching the kingfishers fly past at what seems to be the speed of light only catching a glimpse of that beautiful irridescent colour,with absolutely not a thought going through my mind and only after about an hour thinking isn't this great,somehow feeling that nothing has noticed that I'm here.

Posts: 2410 (15/01/03 12:55) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Solitude,and the sound of water trickling over a weir, or maybe,escaping from,a mainly moslem and hindu cultered ,concrete domain called luton,and my workplace a local 99%asian school.The real world is left behind,as i concentrate on my rod tip,waiting,waiting,waiting to go home,cos ive blanked again,but time passed watching the english,fauna,and flora,and birdlife.Fascinating to watch a family of mink running down the bank,pretty things,and those large black birds diving in the lake behind me,look like Shag,maybe Cormerants.Back to the car and "shit" broken window,some Ba----ds nicked me CD player,worse still have run out of fags,better keep my eyes peeled for an asian corner shop.Bloody foreigners. only kidding ,honest!! What makes it even weirder is that when your asked by other non anglers and you try to explain to them, mostly they think your a sandwich short of a picnic. I still get an adrenalin rush before I go, don't feel any different than when I was 14. Getting on the bus with all my tackle and meeting up with a few mates at Healings mill at Tewkesbury, come what ever the weather. Once on the bank my heart is racing, I kid you not[who said angling is relaxing? Taxing maybe.]. I have a routine that I have kept to for as long as I care to remember. Baiting up a few swims first, leisurley tackle up, tidy my tackle and make myself comfy, roll a ciggy,[I generally only smoke when I fish] study the water and surroungings and then pick up my rod/rods and put the bait on and cast. If the conditions are good for my targetted species my pulse rate by this time is off the scale. Cast out and spark up. Try and relax, not easy. Also being out fishing gives me an excuse to study nature in all it's glory, birds, florer and forner, burtterflies, bloody mink and whatever passes me by. The most arresting thing about angling for me though[apart from catching] is that nothing else interupts my trail of thought. I forget everything and time seems to stand still, a kind of hyper yoga. I just seem to become part of the senery and nothing else exists. [unless of course your sat just a few hundred yards from the M1.] Luckily for me though most of the waters I now fish are away from any hum from road traffic noise. I think thats about it.
