hi , i've recently moved to county durham from west sussex just started fishing the wear anybody else fish it for barbel got any tips.bit different to the hampshire avon or stour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hhhheeeeeeellllppp

Can't help you there but there are some decent rivers just down the A1 in Yorkshire, but you probably already knew that
 And at least you'll be able to understand what the locals are saying down here  Cheers Simon |

Swale - This is the nearest river to County Durham and the barbel go up as far as Richmond which is only about 20 miles from Bishop but they are probably hard to locate that far upstream. Noted areas seem to be Cundall and a little further downstream and around Fawdington/Helperby. These are all day ticket waters and about 40 miles from Bishop. Nidd - This is a little further afield and is quite a small river, ideally suited to a roving approach. The fish are generally smaller than those in the Swale and go up as far as Knaresborough where a 12lb 11oz fish was caught around 20 years ago! An awesome fish considering the river and when it was caught. It seems that Cowthorpe is a noted spot but is not available on day ticket (Bradford No1 water). Day ticket stretches include Tockwith, Skip Bridge and Nun Monkton. Wharfe - Here the barbel go up as far Harewood with the noted areas Linton/Collingham, Boston Spa, Newton Kyme and Tadcaster. All are available on day ticket and are just off the A1 near Wetherby. Check out the Wharfe thread for details on catches this year. There is also the Ure, Ouse and Derwent that have some decent barbel in them but I have little knowledge of these rivers. Other may though. Wellcome Barbelboy, Drop me an e-mail and I'm sure that we can put you on to some water without having to fish the puffters waters. ( they wont fish on the Yorks rivers unless its from the side of their cars) Not a big head of barbel in the Wear, but probably a better chance these days( but not mid-winter) of a big fish than on the York's rivers.

I live in Newcastle and regularly fish the wear for barbel and chub at various stretches from Chester-le-street up to Croxdale (see the Wear reports section for details). But I have to admit that while chubbing has been very productive this season, barbel fishing has been very difficult for myself and most anglers I know. I have had some great barbel from the Wear, including 3 doubles, but these were mainly at the end of the last millenium (depressing when you think of it like that). But don't be too down heartened I know of barbel caught near Durham, Chester-le-Street and Bishop Auckland this year so they are still about. The Tees in the Darlington area is now producing barbel with some regularity so that is also worth a look, and I can see the Tees improving over the coming years. But it also has to be said that once you're on the A1 the Yorkshire rivers aren't a million miles away and can certainly offer a greater quantity of barbel. However as John says the average size of Wear barbel is more than a match for the Swale etc (the Wear Record is 12lb 2oz) and has a fraction of the angling pressure.
