I have a 1st trip to the Kennet @ Kintbury on the game section which is reputed to have some good barbel resident - can anyone help me with advice as to styles / baits etc ( as its a long trip from the Fens without some ideas!!!)

Hi Frank,
I've fished a bit round that area and can't say I've ever heard of a barbel. It looks perfect and wouldn't suprise me if a few are about, but I'd double check with whoevers water it is. If he sees this, Chris Plumb may be the best to answer if there are any barbel around Kintbury.. Over to you Chris....... Cheers, Jon. P.S. Umm, Barbel above Newbury - something I've been trying to establish for some time!! So much of the Kennet here is game only with bait anglers allowed onto some waters in the winter so tales of barbel caught are rare. However there are certainly a few down at Marsh Benham - a mile or so below Kintbury so I don't see why there shouldn't be any at Kintbury.
I'm guessing you're going to Barton Court (unless you've got an invite to The Wilderness). This is much more renowned for it's Grayling fishing and in days gone by there used to be some superb roach fishing here as well. I hear the roach are making a bit of a come back this year. There are also some bigish bream  I intend to fish Marsh Benham, The Wilderness (providing my 'Promise' comes through!) and further upstream toward Hungerford this winter - but at no time will barbel be on the target list of species! I usually do what Jon suggests 2 or 3 pints of maggots trotting gear set up on a match rod and centre pin, travel light and rove around... HTH Chris "Study to be Quiet"

Don't want to pour cold water on this guys, but I have fished here numerous times on this estate and have never seen 1 barbel in the clear water. Bob the guy who controls all the fishing rights has considered stocking a few, (under the guidance of the EA I would suggest!) but currently, as said, there aren't any. I have walked each of the feeder streams also and have seen tonking bream, trout, grayling, huge pike and big roach but sadly, Boris, no. Apart from the barbel it's great fishing on the stick.

If it is Barton Court you are fishing I certainly would have barbel on the agenda - as far as i know there are none that far up. As Lawman says - I have also walked the stretch and feeder streams and seen no sign of chub let alone barbel - but plenty of grayling - some lovely roach and did spot either the worlds largest goldfish or a large golden/orange koi. I fished with maggots and also corn and bread, match rod and pin. It was a lovely way to spend a day
