Posts: 2965 (03/07/02 07:02) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi All, For the first time yesterday, I used barbless hooks, normally I use micro-barbed. Although I managed to land some fish, I was bumped off by as many again. It is not unusual for me to lose one or two fish on micro barbed hooks, but nowhere near as high a percentage as yesterday. What am I doing wrong, when I am hooked into a fish, I feel that I am playing it right, the clutch on my reel is set just right, and soaks up the powerful surges, and I do keep constant pressure on the line. The only time I relax the pressure is if the fish goes into a snag and wants to stay there, this is not usually the time when I get bumped off, it is usually when everything seems fine and the fish is within just a couple of yards of me. Is there a significant difference between Barbed and Barbless hooks when playing a fish. Rayo

Posts: 8064 (03/07/02 07:51) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi ray,contraversial subject but personally i would not change from barbed to barbless, i,ve even stopped fishing at some venues because of forced choice, in a prolonged fight b/less can cause considerable damage to a fishes mouth and i have seen some horrific sights myself ( not by me) and as far as i am concerned barbed is my choice, also you have the additional advantage of the hook not dropping out, unless its already wound itself in deep which is the worse kind of wound.....j.w.

The reason I bought the barbless was because I was going to fish a stretch that only allow barbless, thought I would give em a go yesterday to see how they perform. Rayo

Used them for several seasons with mono on a stretch that didn't allow barbed and had no problems, either with lost fish or mouth damage. Must admit I now usually use micro barbed. Nick C

Posts: 6 (03/07/02 10:07) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi, I seem to get the best of both worlds by buying barbed hooks, and then using pliers to flatten the barb down into more of a bump. I seem to lose less fish than when I use barbless, and unhooking is almost as easy. I also agree that barbless hooks may not be kinder to fish. If a fish gives its all in a fight, it needs to be brought in and suported in the water while it gets its breath back. If it manages to slip off a barbless hook right at the end of the fight, it may be in trouble.

Posts: 2211 (03/07/02 14:20) Banned User Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The wound created by a barb less hook also can take longer to heal, if the hook has moved around in the hole it actually widens the wound and smoothes the skin tissue hampering the healing process , making it more likely to get infected. The barb tends to hold the hook in one position. If you have a job getting your bank stick to go deeper into the ground you turn it around or move it. if it had a barb on the end you would not get it much deeper. I am not against small barb less hooks being used on lakes where novices fish, as it is six of one and half a doz of the other, but there is no reason in my opinion why a skilled experienced angler should have to use barb less hooks. .........Liam

You are of the opinion that barbless do cause damage. The other school of thought is that it is not so. Could just as easily read : The other school of " half " thought is that it is not so. I am not alone in my opinion, which in practical terms is easily demonstrated. Like most views that people hold, that they are trying to force on others to use, it is very easy to only look at one side of the coin. From my point of view it should be left up to the individual angler to chose and not be forced into doing something that is only half thought out. .If someone produced logical scientific evidence to one view or the other, I would be prepared to change my mind. ........Liam PS I am only talking about the larger hook size as I believe that this is where the difference is and rarely use small hooks anyway. Posts: 464 (03/07/02 15:53) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	This is an issue that has always confused the hell out of me, in fact it wasn't until I read opinions on this site that I knew of an argument to say that a barbless hook causes more damage than a barbed hook, after reading the reasons I must say I can understand the logic for such an argument. However consider all the commercial stillwaters, I would bet that at least 95 percent of these waters are barbless only, does this mean that ALL the owners of these fisheries are wrong, lets face it there probably isn't much sentiment involved here as these waters are all money making concerns, and the owners just want to protect thier valuable fish stocks. I'm willing to listen to both sides of the argument, but from my own experience only. I do feel that barbless are probably less damaging, especially when unhooking, we all must have had the scenario where a barbed hook as some how turned round, unhooking in this situation tends to leave a larger scar than a barbless hook. I also think that if you accidently leave a hook in a fish, a barbless has much more chance of working it's way out Personaly I use microbarbs which tend to be a good compromise. Cheers Steve
