I'm still surprised how effective this can be, even the smaller Boris have a go and are caught. Small baits also have their uses, but sometimes the large bait trick seems to work when nothing much else does. Any experiences? Cheers Bob

Posts: 8025 (05/07/02 07:37) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi bob, like yourself i also use BIG baits at times ( more often than not) with meat quite often a raggedy chunk around 2" by 11/2" working on principle that the small stuff cant nick it, it dont always turn out that way but still think it helps , paste well big bits are a definate 75% of the time usually between walnut and golfball size if a barbel wants it it will soon swallow that softish stuff in its gob, also of course you get the additional advantages of extra scent/flavour trails and extra visual pickup without overloading swim with loose stuff, if i am letting a bait find its own way down the river unweighted on the odd occasion you also get the advantage of the weight and extra resistance to feel and observe the line ect......come on you guys has us 2 old boys got it all wrong or right?.....j.w.

I use a semi buoyant bait by wraping paste around large cork balls, I work on the theory that if I use a big enough piece of paste as it washes off the bait becomes more buoyant and therefore more natural looking to the fish. when it comes to using meat I cut it into small cubes and use two or three pieces on a big hook, one of the pieces will be a cube of pink buoyant foam. perhaps we should compare diary's? Posts: 4384 (05/07/02 09:12) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I must admit I use both small and big baits, but a couple of seasons ago I watched (with quite a bit of amusement at the time) as my fishing mate put around a quarter of the 300 g tin of meat on and dropped the bait in. Having a bit of a sense of humour, I made various predictable comments about the bait. Not much time had elapsed when a smallish barbel was hooked and landed to the large bait. Ever since then I've used big baits more frequently and also really small ones - both with quite a bit of success. I suppose I tend to avoid 'usual' sizes - and shapes. I used to use cork balls when using paste and pellets - I now use a drilled floating trout pellet (10mm) - maybe with an added coat of fish oil to counteract the hook weight. Floating pellets last a reasonable time and if your paste washes off there's always the floater as a bait. The oil (Red Salmon Oil or Meaty Bite) gives it that extra bit of staying power and attraction. Really cheap too.... Cheers Bob

I have fished standard size baits 3/4 inch without a touch then immediately had fish after changing to a 3" chunk......or a 1/4inch piece. Ring the changes is the key.
