Hello! some advice if you will. I am considering switching from mono to braid as a mainline. Is this recommended? I understand that braid cuts through weed preventing snags, is more robust and offers better presentation as it is less elastic and more pliable than mono. On the other hand I am worried about those immovable snags where a snap off is inevitavble and the complications involved in this process. Could you please offer me the pro's and cons before I embark. Cheers Matty.

Hello Matt,
First of all before a feature of any bit of kit can be classed as a benefit to you, you need to ask yourself why you are considering changing. In the case of braid v mono the list is endless and of course a matter of oppinion. The main reason you say for changing is increased b.s, what are you using at the moment? are you getting snapped up a lot? What type of river do you fish i.e very snaggy and what size of Barbel do you expect? As with all aspects of fishing confidence plays a major role and you need to be extreemly confident with your tackle when Barbel angling. For your information I use 10lb mono for 95% of my Barbel fishing and can reccomend GR60 and pro gold. Paul |

Thanks for the response. At the moment I use 10lb Maxima and Bass Pro from Double T. I don't imagine that I will catch monsters from the Swale! The reason I am considering changing is that I have read that braid is more supple doesn't stretch and is much stronger than mono. I have recently been doing a lot of flood water fishing which has inevitably lead to snags where tackle has been lost. In addition I watch as my line shrinks further away from the lip of my spool, which means re-filling it. I'm not suggesting that I go through yards and yards of the stuff through snags its just inconvenient (I'm lazy); as well as having to retackle when this happens and the cost of tackle through lost weights etc. In my mind I have this satisfied notion that with braid I wll be able to pull the whole lot free saving me time and money. Am I living in a pipe dream? The other thing that occurred to me is that Swale fish are aware of the line in the water above the hook link. I understand back leading and other alternatives to try and prevent this, but I wondered if a different material would assit in the presentation. After all my hook link is braid for this very purpose. So what do you reckon? |

Hello Matty,
I'm not sure where to begin but will try. By using braid instead of mono you can increase b.s while retaining a low diameter, however this does not guarentee that you will not loose tackle due to snagging, if you get broken up on a snag using 10lb mono then you may just as likely get broken up on braid. Braid does not stretch so there is no margin for error when playing a Barbel which in some cases may result in hook pulls. You say that Swale Barbel are line shy, well in that case I would be more confident with mono, you could if conditions allow pin the line down behind the lead. The debate of Braid v Mono will continue and each angler will have there own oppinion as to which one is best, remember it is only oppinion and there is a case for both. I have tryed braid and caught using it, but did not feel it offered me an advantage in fact I felt less confident so switched back to mono. I have never been broken by or lost a Barbel on 10lb mono. I very rarely get snaged so see no reason to change. Paul. |

Plus bear in mind that even some of the heavier b.s braids are more prone to break on snags as most are not very abrasion resistant at all. Mono will tend to get roughed up a bit when braid breaks easily especially if it touches a snag under tension. Then you potentially could leave a barbel towing 20-30-lb braid around with it. That could end up like the problem in carp fishing with lead core, where tether ups are possible. I know braid fans will say that it never breaks, but it can and it does.
If you do decide to give it a go then be carefull with your knots ( twice through the eye as a minimum and better if line is doubled over first). And remember not to strike too hard as it can break under the initial impact of the strike. |

I would suggest not striking but lifting the rod up firmly.
Never had a break but I would rather drop a fish than have that happen. Cheers
