This strikes me as really strange. We had the fish in on Loddon, and looking down the river reports for the last four days or so, nothing is being court. Bob on the Avon, reports on the Kennet, Ray on the Loddon, on and on. The odd fish is turning up like Paulss. Good fish by the way Paul !
Now there seems no rhyme nor reason for this, the rivers, at least to my mind look perfect. One day, a few days previous Bob had them jumping up the rod. I realise he's a star, but same day Graham and I struggled on Benyons. I hooked a fish in the last knockings, but really can only be described as suffering.
Oddly, following Bobs reports, the Kennet seems to perform the day after the B A, performs ! Possibly more explainable, with the confluence of St Pats and the Loddon. The Loddon always comes on before Pats.
But at the end of the day, seemingly perfect conditions are not baring fruit.
The best theory I can submit is maybe after cold water torpidity the Barbels digestion systems go a bit array. They will stuff themselves with food at the first perfect opportunity, then lay up and digest for a few days. Which can obviously be through further perfect conditions. I assume colder water temps it takes longer to get the juices going. I dont know how similar metabolisms are, but I have noticed Tortoises, coming out of hibernation do similar.
But then Id have thought the weather has been warm enough for long enough for them to have left the torpid states far behind and digestions to have recovered. For that matter its been such a mild winter, Im not sure how long any torpid state could have lasted. The water temps, at least in the Kennet seldom dropped below 4 C, and probaly hit a lowest of 2 C, in maybe a couple of days, long gone.
There, talked myself back to square one ! I still dont understand
Cheers Dick
