I've heard differing opinions on this and various views on oils/breakdown in colder water temperatures Last year switched from using them around end of November and didn't really try them again as I was catching reasonably well on meat, lobworms and paste. In late February was planning on trying them again but F&M stopped play. Any views or experiences? Cheers Bob

Posts: 8034 (06/11/01 14:02) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi bob, shouldn,t be any real problem with them in winter, oils do solidify a bit at really low temperatures but do consider that this is a mixture along with carrier solids, going to try flavouring mine with a spray this winter,spicy? luncheon meat is roughly 35%fat content along with some other stuff i wont go into, also got plenty of seasoning in it?, that works well in winter so pellets should....john.w. john walker

Some of my thoughts were along the lines of those mentioned by John. If you compare the amount of breakdown that you get with a lump of meat with a pellet, the pellet usually shows visual signs of breaking down more. The flavouring pellet angle is something else I have tried with some success using SBS Red Crab. Providing no one says it's of detriment to the fish, I'm going to try them more seriously this winter but this will be alongside meat, paste and my beloved lobworms. Cheers Bob

Posts: 259 (06/11/01 17:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	It may be that pellets will be more successful than meat or paste in winter, due to the fact that they are small - and therefore that allows some to be used as `freebies` without over-filling the swim with food items. I know what I mean, it's just difficult to put into words - but basically, instead of using a meat hookbait of an inch square, you could use 2-3 pellets as the hookbait, plus enough more pellets to make up the same volume as the 1" cube of meat, and use those extra pellets as loose feed to attract the fish into the swim and then hold them. Of course, if you normally use a 2" x 4" chunk of meat, then you can use that total volume of pellet. I used that same principle for years in carp fishing, because I could have more food items in the swim for a given volume of food - the fish had to move around more for that food. Jonty

(well, not in the context above, anyway). Mind you, they are really oily, aren't they ?? - I have cut some Halibut pellets in half with a hacksaw blade, and then drilled them through for hair-mounting, and the amount of oil which the cutting process produces is phenomenal. They should be very attractive. Jonty

Posts: 198 (07/11/01 15:49) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I have been using pellet paste in Winter for a number of years & it is a bait that has saved me from many a blank, even in the coldest conditions. I used to only try pellet paste in Winter as a last resort, after trying meat, cheese & worms etc, but now it is the first bait I try. I find that pellet paste seems to work best in Winter when the river is clear, it seems less effective in flood conditions.

Thinking of trying them out.
