Thought that perhaps we could help him in finding one and what we use. I use a Reuben Heaton job. Think it cost around £15, 10 odd years ago. It does a good job and can be found at most decent tackle shops. What do you use ? Cheers Andy Only Sunday night left to go !!!!!!!

Posts: 4384 (04/11/01 11:22) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi Chaps, I use a digital one with a dual readout that gives me water and air temperature, has a 3m probe lead ( can be extended by soldering some extra wire - make the joints waterproof though), has minimum/maximum memory and reads out degrees C or F. Measures 70 x 70 x 15 mm. Cost me £9.99 at Maplin. Although my model has been discontinued, they do a number that should suit ranging from around £8 to £20. Tandy should also have a few suitable offerings. OK you can't cast it out to take deep temperatures but it should give the general indication of whats happening. Tip, if you have problems of getting the probe to sink in flow conditions a bit of Heavy Metal applied near the probe should fix this problem. With a battery life of around 6 to 12 months, you can monitor temperature progress throughout your session - if you wish. Want any further information? - Hope this helps. Cheers Bob

Posts: 183 (04/11/01 12:45) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I use a digital model bought from Tandys, it gives me two read outs for water and air tempretures and is a vital aid in the winter. I use it not only to take the tempreture when I start fishing but to monitor the tempreture over the sesion I can the tell if the tempreture is rising or falling which to my mind is vital. Ray.

I remember getting somewhat preoccupied last year and earlier this one - often speaking to the readout saying 'Come on my son you can do it' or 'Rise you B*******' I reckon I'm a little mad.....but bet a lot of you do the same! Posts: 2143 (04/11/01 15:30) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi Andy and all, Over the years, I have lost count of the Ruben Heaton thermometers I have smashed or lost. Dropped them on rocks shattering the plastic container, sat on them, left them behind still in the water. ( this I still do regularly) What I use now is a soil thermometer purchased from good garden centres. These types come in a metal case that displays the readings via a cut out piece in the metal tube. I add a small poly ball just above the thermometer on a cord so that when thrown into the river, it sinks upright thus stopping it from getting caught up in rocks and so forth. They cost around £7 and are very good. Which reminds me, I need to go and buy another one today. Once again a couple of weeks ago, I left mine tied to a clump of reedmace when I packed up. Someone, somewhere, is benefiting from my absent mind. As Ray Wood says, a thermometer is a vital piece of tackle for the winter time barbel angler which when used correctly, can result in far more winter barbel on the bank. Regards, Lee.
