i didnt know if it was worth me trying in the winter as i thought the idea of fishing them in hot summers was because of the oxygen rich cool water crashing in, and surely in winter this can't be any good can it??
cheers Dan

winter weirpools, are they worth a go? |

hi all we know that in summer weirs can be very productive during the day, well they have been for me anyway! but i was wondering if they are worth a go in winter when it is cold?, the one at sharnbrook has a very deep hole in it and i was speaking to a guy settling in for the night and it was freezing cold.

Dan,
keep at it my son, winter wierpools can be just as productive as they are in the summer, I fished King Wier all year round for years and believe me it could be very productive in the winter when conditions were right. I am sure Phil Buckingham will endorse that, as would Fred Crouch, so keep at it and try to fish when conditions are right. Tight lines Ray |

Quite right Ray, the winter weirpools can be just as productive as during the summer and in the depths of winter it is still possible to find feeding fish in the white water as well as in the calm water beneath the sill. I have had excellent winter results on the big Kennet weirs at Lower Benyons and Burghfield in years gone by.

Hi Dan
Defiantly an all year round prospect, go for it. Even when the centre parts are to heavy with flow to fish comfortably, try the back eddy tight to the bank shelf. Cheers Dick |

dan , must agree with all advice given, always somewhere in weir for fish to find respite from the current in times of flood ect, when weir,s running heavy might be worth a try tight against the walls either side of weir providing not too snaggy, barbel love hugging these areas especially in time of flood , lots of holes ect underneath water in the walls......john.w.

Agree with all. Main reason is because if the fish are in the weirpool they generally are active/feeding as against lying dormant in the deeper runs.

If it's the weirpool I am thinking of them yes it is.
If you look at the old leagues you'll see Dick Knight on there a couple of times and all those fish bar one came from that weirpool. Couldn't get him away from there for 2 seasons ! Heard a rumour, just rumour mind you, of a 14 from that area as well. Daniel, give me a bell I have misplaced your number ! Cheers Andy |

Definately worth fishing weirpools in the Winter ,particularly if they have deep holes and slack areas ,although as has already been said on this thread you can still catch right in the white water also.
As Ray Wood mentions Kings Weir produces all through the winter ,it produces when in full flood and even with snow on the ground ,it is deep though with up to 10 foot of water under the sill ,more in flood of course. Phil Buckingham |
