Ive just been looking back at the Moonstrike.co.uk site for the first time in a while and have noticed that my results don't correlate very well with the published charts. I find this surprising as my instinct tells me that the moon has an effect on most animals (both in legend, anecdote and psychological science). At present I am putting this down to a lack of data though the possibility of a regional variation in behaviour springs to mind - any thoughs anyone?

I have to be honest and say I tend towards believing in at least some connection and have had a few minor email exchanges on the subject. I have had all my carp, barbel and cats on peak days this season. Peak days I have fished have been down to coincidence...ie the weekend..when I fish....but they do tie up and I can't argue with that. I have one of Chris's charts to use as I want to know for myself. The best days are now leaning away from weekends until the end of the year and so I at least should begin to see more evidence for or against. I don't get to choose when I fish!!!!

ive always found (most times that is) that when that big ole moon is up there my friends want to play least of all, never really give it a lot of thought ,just took it for granted thats the way things were but i would be interested on any enlightenment on the subject... i know fings wiv fangs cum out on a full moon an if it means pike as well im stayin indoors.... j.w.

Jury still out - yesterday was meant to be dire but i got 3 fish in an hour and a half - not bad for me... also i noticed something else.. you know winters on the way when you lift a fish from the water and it feels sort of ... warm... to chilled fingers.

Which hour and a half? Havent had time to work out times for this new moon(tommorrow} and surrounding days, They should be about 45mins back on the times I have on the site for last months nm, for those that look. Chris |

Hi Guys
I don't know about the stages of the moon on the barbel and wether they feed better on a new moon etc, but I do know that a bright moon and cloudless night is the kiss of death any time of the year. Cheers Peter |

Hi Peter,
Not according to Tony Miles who has taken numerous big barbel and chub in such conditions, some of my best nights have been on the first and second after first quarter, and it was very light. Opening night last season had one of the fullest moons of the year, the sky was clear as a bell over england, and numerous 100lb,bags of fish were reported to the angling rags. Lots of double fig barbel were caught around the country between 00.00 and o1.30, the moon was at its high point then, and nearest to us therefore at its brightest, yet fish were going "ape". If it is dead fishing under a bright moon then it is not the moon which is killing sport. That said I still favour fishing through the day around FM, as whenever I fish the nights it aint much cop, but I always get that gloomy negative atmosphere descend. The atmosphere was "dry" on opening night last season. The days/nights around the FM can be corkers, as demonstrated by last years catches on opening day and the next, this year in better conditions they were going on how sock on everything was for the start,(EXCEPT THE MOON PHASE) miraculously the first days were rubbish, sort of says it all! hi chris, good to hear from you,
the three fish came between eight and 9:30 on 6th sept - couldnt say if fishing changed through the session as i was only there between just before 8 and 10 pm. Dont know what the forecast for saturday was... fished from 2:30 - first fish (chub) at 5pm, broke my barbel blank with a 5lb demon at 6pm and finished with a small chub at 7:15. Incidentally my best day of the season so far was june17th with 6lb bream, two 5lb chub, 8 and a half lb barbel and a couple of smaller chub to boot - caught between 4pm and 7:30pm - dead for a couple of hours either side. As i said earlier.. i'm sure that with more data (or skill) my returns will begin to reflect something in the lunar cycle - i just wonder whether that may also be differences caused by localised factors (other than weather etc).
