The challenge is to say how you'd go about catching the biggest barbel in the swim: The Swim! What tactic and approach would you use to catch the biggies bearing in mind that you only 4 hours to fish and it's the last day of the season!? How would you bait, where would you bait, how would you avoid those whopping great chub!? Cheers, Andy F

But if I can only fish from "the swim", I would bait steadily with my home made feeders and risk a last cast with half a tin of meat on the hook, so big the smaller Barbel and Chub couldn't take it. Then sit on my hands until the rod gets nearly pulled in. Steve PS, it is the lower Severn isn't it? never argue with an idiot he will drag you down to his level and then beat ya with experience.

I would introduce particles upstream of the tree with the intention of keeping the smaller barbs busy and hopefully creating an interest amongst the biggies. I would then repeatedly trundle a large piece of meat, minimally weighted, from around J3 past the biggies until one of them grabbed it (probably well into next season!). Mark.

In the hope that one of the biggies would come accross the hook bait on there way to investigate the particles trickling down. I normally carry some pva string, so my approach would be to introduce some feed up stream and see what reaction that provoked. If the fish fed I would watch what the biggies did. If they held station, would attach a balanced bait to a stick with pva and cast it just above the tree allowing the current to take it over the heads of the barbs at the tree and melt and sink just ahead of the biggies. If they pushed the smaller ones out of the way and moved forward I would pre-bait but a safe distance upstream from the snag for a few days and come back at a later date to intercept them en route - a la 'Up close and personal'. Posts: 1301 (27/10/05 13:01) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	same as steve, half a tin of spam midway between the little ones and the biggies, just on the edge of the bushes. add some lovely stinking glug to it, and coat it in fishmeal powder/groundbait. i wouldnt introduce a pva stick because it would probably spook them as it hit the water. use a small rolling ledger and let the flow take it to them.

Posts: 419 (27/10/05 13:20) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I see a problem in casting to the bigger fish, chances are they will run upstream to that snag & with so much line out the angle of that snag comes in to play. I'd probably try & get them competing with the scamps in the snag so would cast to R5 & bait up at U5, just a handful of loose offerings & then reposition the lead slightly so it dropped down the river bed to O5, that's where i'd probably expect a barbel to take the bait. Hopefully this can be repeated until one of the bigger fish comes along to take the bait. Alternatively, drop the hookbait under your rod tip at L9 and wait for the action to start.

As long as you are careful (if in doubt use a wading staff) you'd be amazed at the swims you can access and the extent to which fish will tolerate an angler in the water as opposed to on the bank. If so then assuming I'm only allowed access from "the swim" I'd slip into the water there at L9, make my way very slowly and quietly along the near bank bushes (probably scaring the chub but with four hours to go I can live with any temporary alarms they raise), cross the river from A8 to A3 (actually I'd probably carry on down to A minus to cross the river if that makes sense) then, when everything's calmed down, flick a big lob upstream to the biggest barbel without any pre-baiting etc. If nothing happened then I'd toss some hemp and mini pellets up to I3, leave it an hour and then drop in a big pellet or hunk of meat and hey presto mine's a whacker! There again if it's more than four feet deep in the middle I was the one drowning about an hour ago!
