Posts: 3 (20/09/07 13:26) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None hi, i am looking to go barble fishing for the 1st time very soon. me and a group of friends have been looking for somewhere as local to us as possible to try out, and have found this stretch of the river trent. there are 7 pegs owned by a fishery, which is very near to the A616 (Newark). i've never been there yet, and i can't find any decent pictures to show you, so i'm just hoping 1 of you guys has fished it and can offer me/us some tips. www.smeatonslakes.co.uk/ this is the club that owns the pegs we are visiting, unfortunately they don't have pictures of their pegs on the river, but if you've been , hopefully you'll recognise it from their site P.S once i get back i'll get some pictures on here, so even the guys that haven't seen it before can have a look and see how they would have fished it. thanks in advance

Posts: 841 (20/09/07 23:05) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	river low at the moment so if you are fishing in the day i'd fish light with hemp and caster.If you can try and fish either dusk into night or at first light,apparently the end pegs are the best.Watch out for the BIG carp. mike

Posts: 3 (21/09/07 09:19) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	thanks mike, my friend spoke to a bailiff yesterday, and he told him that the end pegs were best, so you certainly know the spot i'm going down there on either saturday or sunday of next week (Sunday is looking favourite) so rather than fish into the night, i think we'll arrive early and be set up for 1st light. i feel like a kid at christmas eve, can't wait for the big day hopefully i'll have some pics of my 1st barbel aswell as the peg i fished

We're going to go down saturday afternoon to fish into dusk, then stay overnight and fish 1st light too, so hopefully your tips will pay off any extra tips before we go would be appreciated. This is the the setup i'm thinking to use, but as this is my 1st time for barbel i'm unsure if it'll be ok... i'm using a medium gauge shimano quiver tip rod (with the heaviest tip of the 3), with 10 or 12lb main line (not sure which to use, and not sure which hook length/hook size),on a shakespeare bait runner reel.i'm not sure on the ledger weight to use. i'm thinking 2oz, but haven't seen the flow, so advice would be great there too. as for bait, like Mike reccomended, i'm going to use hemp seed with castor as a hooked bait for the daylight sessions(how many castor should i put on my hook, i'm thinking 1 wouldn't be enough with a large hook, but not sure), and then curried spam for my night bait. what do you think ? Posts: 1 (03/08/09 19:43) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi there ive recently had my first trent barbel on my first trip from the Farndon Wier section, my fishin buddie who fishes the river alot for the carp and barbel, advised me that my heavy feeder wouldnt be man enough for the job and to take my carp rods . We needed between 6 and 8 oz by the wier to hold bottom ( 3 1/2oz futher down river)my first barbel came at 2:50 am weighing in at 8lb3oz and i soon found out why guys spend yrs targeting these super hard fighting fish, my 2 1/4tc rod was bent dbl and my clutch screemed off several times, anything lighter wouldnt stand the pressure and be man enough to land a decent fish without causing it more harm than necassary. So in my humble and maybe somewhat novice oppinion is that if your going to target such fish in rivers like the Trent go as heavy as u can.
